As part of a broader initiative to develop tennis among students in the Volta Region, Sonrise Christian High School in Ho has officially unveiled its new tennis court. The event, held with much fanfare, highlighted the school’s commitment to nurturing young talent in the sport.
The unveiling ceremony featured a special exhibition match between the Vice-Chancellor of Ho Technical University, Professor Ben Honyenuga, and the Headmaster of Sonrise Christian High School, Mr. Joseph Dzamesi.
The friendly competition, which served as the curtain-raiser for the event, showcased both players’ skills. In an exciting match, Prof. Honyenuga emerged victorious, winning five sets to two.
In his remarks, Prof. Honyenuga emphasized the importance of sports, particularly tennis, in shaping students’ discipline and overall development.
He noted that his involvement in the initiative aligns with efforts to make tennis more accessible to schools in the region.
The Vice-Chancellor also praised Sonrise Christian High School
for their investment in sports infrastructure, which he said will go a long way in promoting tennis as a popular sport among students.
One of the highlights of the day was a tennis clinic organised by Tennis Foundation Ghana, which catered to children aged between 5 and 11 years. More than 100 aspiring young tennis players participated in the one-day clinic, receiving basic tennis training from experienced coaches.
The clinic provided an opportunity for the children to learn new skills, develop their passion for the game, and gain inspiration from the official opening of the school’s new tennis facility.
The headmaster of Sonrise Christian High School, Mr. Joseph Dzamesi, expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders involved, noting that “the new tennis court will not only benefit students of the school but also serve the broader community”.
He added that the school aims to organize regular tennis events and clinics to further develop the sport in the region.
