Accra: Mr. Edem Afeeva, Ayawaso West Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has called on political leaders, community heads, and influential figures to refrain from actions or statements that may incite the youth into violence. Mr. Afeeva emphasised that young people were often influenced by leaders they look up to, making it crucial for authorities to promote peace and national unity rather than division and conflict.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Afeeva highlighted that the youth represent the future of Ghana, and their energy should be directed towards nation-building, rather than destructive activities. He cautioned against the use of inflammatory language or encouraging confrontation, as some young people might interpret such actions as justification for violence.
Mr. Afeeva referenced the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which emphasises national unity and peaceful coexistence by discouraging acts that incite violence or disrupt social harmony. He appealed to Ghanaians to uphold democratic values and foster tolerance and understanding among themselves.
He urged political parties, community leaders, and social influencers to use their platforms to educate young people on the importance of non-violent engagement on national issues. Additionally, he called for the provision of opportunities for the youth to contribute meaningfully to society through education and employment.
Mr. Afeeva pointed out that violence, particularly during or after elections, could result in the loss of lives and the destruction of properties. He noted that Ghana had made significant progress in its democratic governance, and it was essential not to allow violent acts to reverse the gains made.
He called for stronger civic education programmes to equip young people with the knowledge and skills to engage in peaceful and constructive dialogue. The Commission, he affirmed, would continue its efforts to educate citizens on their rights and responsibilities, as well as the dangers of being manipulated into violence.
