Mohammed Saves Kotoko After Three Penalty Misses

Kumasi- Yakubu Mohammed stepped up with a late strike as Asante Kotoko edged their Congolese counterparts CARA 1-0 in the first leg match of the preliminary round of the Confederation of Africa (CAF) Confederations Cup on Sunday.

Saddick Adams, Amos Frimpong and Baba Mahama all missed from the spot, but substitute Yakubu Mohammed delivered a late gasp from another penalty spot for Kotoko to emerged victors.

Kotoko controlled affairs in the early stages of the game as they applied early pressure and were awarded a penalty in the sixth minute after CARA defender Ikouma Epoyo handled the ball.

Kotoko striker Saddick Adams failed to capitalize from 12 yards as he blasted wide to the relieve of the CARA defence in the fourth minute. Saddick’s penalty miss dented the hopes of the teaming supporters who were very vibrant in the early stages.

Kwame Boahene came close in giving Kotoko the lead in the 29th minutes but his curled effort struck the cross bar after a fingertip save from CARA goalkeeper Massa Chansel.

CARA nearly took the lead against the run of play, when Oyoh Thouey Rox forced a brilliant and superb save from Kotoko goalkeeper Felix Annan who was dormant in the first half.

Wahab Adams came close in giving Kotoko the lead in the last stages of the first half but his ferocious low shoot effort was cleared off the line by Danga Bossina Chancy.

Kotoko started the second half on the front foot as they applied the early pressure on the CARA defence. Referee Issa Sy awarded Kotoko the second penalty of the game in the 62nd minute but Amos Frimpong unbelievably missed from the spot to despair and anguish of the teaming supporters.

Referee Isasa Sy awarded Kotoko a third penalty, but once again Baba Mahama also stepped and missed from the spot. The game was indeed a thrilling one as Referee Issa awarded CARA their first penalty of the game but Massa Chansel also amazingly missed from the spot.

Referee Issa Sy awarded the fifth penalty of the day to Kotoko as Yakubu stepped up and struck home for Kotoko in the 93rd minute.
