Man Drowns in Kasoa Floods After Ignoring Warnings

Kasoa: A man lost his life in Kasoa on Saturday evening, June 14, after falling into an uncovered gutter during a heavy downpour, highlighting ongoing concerns about poor drainage infrastructure in the area. The incident occurred in the Ironcity area, where drainage problems have long plagued residents.

According to Ghana News Agency, the victim, identified as N.K Godfred and believed to be in his early thirties, was reportedly on his way home from work when he attempted to cross a flooded drain. Eyewitnesses said bystanders warned him not to cross, but he ignored the warnings and was quickly swept away by the strong current. His body was found on Sunday afternoon in another part of the Ironcity community.

Saturday’s rains also inundated several other communities, including Opeikuma, Krispo City, Joemens Kpometey, and Dokutsekope, leaving many homes submerged. Mr. Kennedy Acheampong, Assemblyman for Ironcity-Dokutsekope Electoral Area, admitted that flooding had remained a persistent problem, despite repeated concerns raised by the community.

In a related incident, more than 300 houses were submerged in Asamoah Town, a suburb of Kasoa Opeikuma, after the Okrudu River overflowed its banks following three hours of continuous rainfall on Sunday. The floodwaters swept through homes, leaving furniture and personal belongings floating in the water. Residents blamed the situation on incomplete drainage projects, poor infrastructure planning and unchecked construction on waterways.

In response, residents urgently called for government intervention to prevent further tragedies in the area.
