KOFI ANNAN LIES IN STATE IN ACCRA

ACCRA– The body of former United nations Secratary-General Kofi Annan is lying in state at the Accra International Conference Centre here after the Reverend Dr Daniel Slyvanus Mensah Torto, the Anglican Bishop of Accra, led the solemn service to receive the remains here Monday night.

The casket containing the remains of Annan is decorated with the national colours of red, gold and green, with a black star. The ceremony to receive the remains was witnessed by dignitaries, led by First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo, Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorko Botchwey, amd the widow, Nane Maria Lagergren, and family members.

A three-day national funeral service commencing from Tuesday, September 11 to Thursday 13, would be held in memory of Annan. World leaders and people from all walks of life are expected to pay their last respects to the global peace icon, who served humanity with integrity and humility.

Annan passed away peacefully on Aug 18 in the Swiss city of Berne, after a short illness. He was 80.

Annan was the seventh United Nations Secretary-General, heading the global body from January 1997 to December 2006.
