High Court throws out Akuapem Poloo’s appeal

An Accra High Court has thrown out an appeal filed by Rosemond Alade Brown aka Akuapem Poloo against her 90 day jail term given to her by an Accra Circuit Court.

This means Akuapem Poloo’ would commence her journey to jail today.

An Accra Circuit Court in April this year, sentenced Akuapem Poloo to 90 days imprisonment after she changed her plea for displaying naked pictures of herself and son on social media.

The High Court presided over by Ms Justice Ruby Aryeetey held that the 90-jail term was appropriate and not excessive and same should not be distributed.

“This court will not interfere with the sentence and the appeal is therefore dismissed,” the court ruled.

It directed that a responsible and competent person in the family of the convict should take care of Akuapem Poloo’s son.

An Accra Circuit Court presided over by Mrs Christiana Cann, sentenced Akuapem Poloo to 90 days imprisonment for publishing her nude picture in which she was standing beside her son on social media.

This was after she had pleaded guilty to the charge of publication of obscene material, engaging in domestic violence, namely a conduct that, in any way, undermined another person’s privacy or integrity and engaging in domestic violence, namely conduct that, in any way, detracted or was likely to detract from another person’s dignity and worth as a human being.

The lower court convicted her on her own plea and was sentenced accordingly.

Three days after the actress was sentenced, her lawyer Mr Andy K Vortia appealed against the sentence because the jail term was excessive because the convict was a first-time offender and her admission of guilt.

Counsel further contended that the court could have imposed a fine on her and not hand down a custodial sentence.

Akuapem Poloo, then filed an application for bail pending an appeal.

The court admitted her to GHS80,000 bail with three sureties. She was asked by the High Court to deposit her passport with the court’s registry and report to the police fortnightly.
