Accra: Hearts of Oak defied odds to beat Medeama SC at the TNA Stadium in a match week nine of the 2024-25 Ghana Premier League (GPL). Two goals from Kwabena Boateng and Mawuli Wayo ensured that the Phobians picked up their third of the season, putting them up to seventh position on the league table.
According to Ghana News Agency, following last week’s shock loss to Bibiani Gold Stars at home, the Phobians were under pressure to get results in Tarkwa. Coach Aboubakar Ouattara’s squad played tactfully in the first half, sitting back and enabling the opponents to attack. The Phobians were excellent in defense which was being marshalled by Kelvin Osei Asibey while they deployed the counter-attack strategy.
Hearts of Oak started the second half on the front foot and Hamza Isaah found a way past the Medeama defence and teed up Boateng who converted from close range. Medeama SC responded very well, mounting relentless pressure on the Hearts defence and goalkeeper Benjamin Asare came up with some brilliant saves
to maintain his side’s lead.
Substitute Wayo scored the second goal for Hearts in the 88th minute after goalkeeper Asare set him up with a long ball to cap off an impressive win for the Phobians. Hearts of Oak would be seeking another win next week when they face off against Vision FC at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
