Accra, June 5, GNA – The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Foundation undertook 341 infrastructure projects between 2017 and 2020.

It also awarded scholarships totalling GHC214.3 million during the same period.

Mr William Owuraku Aidoo, a Deputy Minister of Energy, disclosed this on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday in response to a question by Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tongu North.

Mr Rockson-Nelson?Dafeamekpor, the MP for South Dayi, on behalf of Mr Ablakwa asked the Deputy Minister of Energy to provide a detailed list of beneficiaries of the GNPC Foundation’s activities and interventions with breakdown of the cost of each item from the period 2017 to 2020.

The Deputy Minister said in 2018, the Foundation undertook 106 activities at the cost of GHC47.9 million, while 193 activities were carried out in 2019 at the cost of GHC113.1 million.

He noted that in 2020, the Foundation carried out 42 activities costing GHC53.3 million.

Madam Bethy Nana Efua Krosbi Mensah, the MP for Afram Plains North, on her part, asked the Deputy Minister when communities in her Constituency, namely Abotanso, Atiwulame, Kamalo, Agordeke, Caterpillartornu, Anidze, Fasobattor, Avatime, Adukrom and Sawua, would be connected to the National Grid.

The Deputy Minister, in his response, noted that the Ministry of Energy had approved a feasibility study on islands and lakeside communities in the Afram Plains North Constituency.

“The study is expected to start in August 2022 and be completed by September 2022,” Mr Aidoo said.

“Following this undertaking, funding will be sourced for communities to be electrified through renewable energy mini-grids.”

He said communities that did not qualify for mini-grid electrification would be considered for grid electrification and solar home system.
