GNA wins tourism award

Tamale Ghana News Agency (GNA) has been adjudged Tourism Oriented Media organization (Online Category) in recognition of its works that highlight tourism and tourism related issues.

The GNA took the award at the Northern Regional Tourism Awards 2018 organized by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) in Tamale on Saturday night to recognize and reward tourism operators in the region for their efforts to promote sector.

A citation accompanying the award praised GNA for its accurate online publications on tourism and tourism related issues in the Northern Region.

The citation said You give visibility to tourism programmes and activities organized in the region thus your efforts at championing domestic tourism are recognized and greatly appreciated.

Besides the GNA, a number of tourism operators in the region were also honoured for their various roles in promoting tourism over the previous year.

Gariba Lodge was adjudged two-star hotel of the year while Alhassan Hotel, which started business in Tamale in 1972, was adjudged the oldest hotel of the year.

Alhaji Hakeem Ismael, Northern Regional Manager of GTA said the number of hotels and restaurants in the region has increased from 170 in 2016 to 250 in 2017 making the sector one of the highest contributors to the development of the economy of the region.

Alhaji Ismael also announced that United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has adopted Larabanga Mosque, an ancient mosque at West Gonja District of the Savannah Region as a World Heritage Site.

Mr Salifu Saeed, Northern Regional Minister, said the region was the heart of culture and tradition in the country and urged investors to bring their capital to the region for meaningful returns.
