Adzido: Some 28 beneficiaries of the Gakpey Apprenticeship Programme (GAP), an initiative of Mr. Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, Member of Parliament for Keta, have graduated. The program aims to empower the youth by equipping them with marketable skills. This graduation follows the earlier ceremony for 40 apprentices at Hatorgodo, marking the completion of vocational training in trades such as welding, carpentry, dressmaking, hairdressing, and auto mechanics.

According to Ghana News Agency, the graduates received essential tools, including sewing machines, hairdryers, carpentry planes, saws, and hammers, to help them begin their careers. During the graduation and mini rally event attended by Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, running mate to Mr. John Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Gakpey emphasized the program’s impact. Over 1,000 youth have gained practical skills, enabling them to pursue sustainable livelihoods and contribute to the local economy.

Mr. Gakpey highlighted his achiev
ements in areas such as education, rural electrification, and health. He mentioned screening about 15,000 constituents for eye conditions, with around 1,500 having their conditions corrected. He urged support for former President Mahama’s return, aligning GAP with NDC’s proposed national apprenticeship program.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang expressed gratitude to the tradespersons for passing on their expertise and commended the graduates for their dedication. She assured that a return of Mahama’s government would bring significant transformations in vocational training and skills development nationwide.

Tradespersons and parents of beneficiaries shared their appreciation for the program’s impact. Ms. Forgive Awayigah, a GAP beneficiary, expressed her excitement about starting her dressmaking shop, highlighting the program’s role in fostering self-reliance and meaningful societal contributions.
