Kong: The Rural Organisation of Women Farmers and Agro Processing Development (ROWFAD) Ghana has initiated efforts to introduce a new crop variety, fonio, to farmers in Sissala East. The non-governmental organization recently organized a field trip, attended by over 60 farmers from 10 communities, to educate them about fonio cultivation and the use of Acres brand Nano organic fertilizer, intended to enhance nutrient content through mass spraying of crops.

According to Ghana News Agency, the event, themed ‘Fostering Sustainable Agricultural and Food Security with Acres Nano Organic Fertilizer,’ was a significant step toward promoting sustainable agriculture in the region. Mr. Yaana Yahaya, Chief Executive Officer of ROWFAD, highlighted fonio’s resilience, describing it as the ‘Seed of Life’ and noting its origins in the Sahelian region where it thrives in harsh soil conditions with minimal rainfall. He emphasized fonio’s nutritional benefits, citing its richness in amino acids and high fiber content, which could address various health issues. The crop’s quick maturation, being harvestable within six to eight weeks, makes it a reliable food source during challenging times.

Mr. Yahaya announced ROWFAD’s plans to cultivate 10,000 fonio crops in Sissala East and Wa East, aiming to improve nutrition and boost income for marginalized farmers, especially women. Mr. Samuel Akuetteh, a Crops Officer from the Department of Agriculture in Sissala East, expressed support for the initiative, noting the environmental benefits of fonio and the department’s commitment to promoting its production. He mentioned that fonio’s inclusion in the district’s crop categories would be recognized through awards to encourage farmers.

Mr. Samuel Awiah, Manager of Acres International Africa, explained the benefits of Acres organic fertilizer, emphasizing its 100 percent organic nature and its ability to restore soil quality. Certified by the University of Ghana, this fertilizer aims to benefit communities and increase farmers’ income, providing a cost-effective alternative to inorganic fertilizers. Acres International Africa operates in several African countries, including Burkina Faso and C´te d’Ivoire.

Mr. Musah Baduawie, chairman of the Kong Garden Association (KONSIFA), requested support for protecting their garden from animals, while Mr. Biyirah Bapoh Abdullah, secretary of KONSIFA, encouraged farmers to participate in dry season gardening and cultivate fonio to combat environmental degradation.
