Five Hundred Amputees to Receive Free Artificial Limbs Nationwide

Accra: About 500 amputees nationwide are set to benefit from free artificial limbs being donated by the Center for Advocacy for Persons with Disability (CAPWD) and Ishk Tolaram Foundation, Nigeria. The initiative is in collaboration with the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD) and the Ghana Federation of Disability (GFD).

According to Ghana News Agency, the donation is structured in two phases, with the first phase already underway, involving the measurement of amputees for the fabrication and moulding of the limbs in Nigeria. Mr. Thomas Awinbila, president of CAPWD Ghana and coordinator for the Ishk Tolaram Foundation, Ghana, detailed that once moulding is complete, the second phase will involve fitting, adjusting, and training the 500 beneficiaries with their new limbs in August.

Mr. Awinbila emphasized the significance of this initiative, celebrating it as a landmark achievement in their ongoing efforts to support amputees in various communities. He highlighted that the donation reflects a commitment to inclusivity and aims to positively impact the lives of beneficiaries, enhancing their self-reliance, confidence, and dignity.

He provided insight into the challenges faced by those with disabilities, noting that physical, mental, sensory, or cognitive impairments can limit an individual’s ability to perform certain tasks. These limitations, coupled with societal barriers, often prevent full participation in society, sometimes resulting in stigmatization and undermining the dignity of the impaired.

Discussing the causes of amputation, Mr. Awinbila identified factors such as medical conditions, accidents, congenital conditions, poor circulation, and neurological issues. He stressed the importance of preventive care, timely medical interventions, and support for affected individuals.

Mr. Awinbila expressed gratitude to all stakeholders involved and urged non-governmental organizations in Ghana, alongside international institutions, to collaborate in extending support to more amputees across the country.

Miss Christabel Coppong, a 15-year-old amputee from Dansoman in the Greater Accra Region, shared her excitement about receiving artificial limbs. She expressed relief at the prospect of moving beyond the need for crutches, highlighting the potential for improved mobility and quality of life. Ms. Coppong extended her appreciation to CAPWD Ghana and the Ishk Tolaram Foundation for their support, acknowledging the significant impact it will have on the lives of those physically disabled.
