Krabonso (BE/R) Dec. 14, GNA- The European Union (EU) is funding a four-year project to improve ginger production and fish farming for job creation and poverty reduction in Kintampo North, Kintampo South, Pru East and Pru West Districts of the Bono East Region.

Titled “promoting access of indigenous people to decent work and social protection,” the project seeks to create employment for the vulnerable in society, including people with disabilities, women and the youth in the four districts.

It is being implemented by the Centre for Local Governance Advocacy (CLGA), the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), Centre of Prosperity Interest Organization (COPIO) and the Abrono Organic Farming Project (ABOFAP).

The project has set up demonstration centres at Kabronso in Kintampo South and Charanda in the Kintampo North to assist ginger farmers to store, process, add value and package raw ginger for the easy market.

In addition, the project has established separate demonstration sites for fish farming at Yeji in the Pru East and Prang in the Pru West district of the region.

Speaking at a symbolic inauguration of the demonstration centres at a ceremony held at Kabronso, Mr Benjamin Amofa, the Project Manager, explained the project targeted to motivate the people to engage in ginger production and fish farming to fetch themselves jobs.

The project would further provide skills development, enhance basic infrastructure as well as provide inputs for beneficiaries to engage in commercial production, as well as value addition.

“As part of efforts to provide raw material, the project has acquired 200 acres of farmland to improve ginger cultivation,” he said.

Already, he said the project had supported 2,400 households in the beneficiary districts, with many of them registered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Mr Isaac Owusu, the Project’s Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, advised the beneficiary districts to own the project to help improve socio-economic livelihoods.

Mr Opoku Nyame, Kintampo South District Chief Executive, commended the EU and the project, implementing partners and expressed the hope the people would take advantage of the project to better their lives.
