Editors’ encouraged to create balance in their content
Accra- Media houses have been urged to create a balance for a new narrative that would help give the populace new hope.
The new narrative is to move from the all-politics content to issues that would make the world a better place for all.
They are also being encouraged to set agenda on developmental issues that would help improve the livelihood of people as well as provide platforms for public discussions to serve as catalysts for the citizenry to empower themselves.
Dr Loiuse Carol Serwaa Donkor, Policy and Communication Analyst on SDGs Advisory Unit from the Office of the President, made the call during media engagement with news editors in Accra on Thursday on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
She said, by so doing, Ghanaians would be able to hold duty bearers accountable.
Dr Donkor said, the media should see that as a social contract, as it was the only way to help bring transformational change.
It was high time the media de-politicised issues that boiled down on societal development and lead the discourse to promote growth in the Country, she noted.
Dr Felix Addo-Yobo, Acting Director of Development Policy Division-NDPC said SDGs had come to rectify the challenges of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which recorded wastage, duplication of functions, among others due to lack of coordination.
It had brought about a sense of ownership, involvement in sharing experiences and improved partnership and collaboration between government, private sector, faith-based organisations among other stakeholders.
To improve coordination, the SDGs would be implemented through decentralised planning system and there would be awareness creation, planning process and implementation structures.
Ms Cynthia Prah, National Information Officer of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), said the Goals would be centered on five ‘Ps’ of People, Planet, Partnership, Prosperity and Peace and they would be interconnected.
She urged the media to hold national institutions responsible to put certain things in place to ensure that the goals were achieved.
