Aflao: Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Eric Bamfo, the District Crime Officer of Aflao, has advised members of the Mobile Money Advocacy Group (MoMAG) to disrupt any of the three core pillars of the Routine Activity Theory to minimize crime and safeguard their operations. Speaking at a general meeting of the Aflao Chapter of MoMAG, ASP Bamfo explained that the Routine Activity Theory, developed by two American criminologists in the 1980s, identifies three essential elements for a crime to occur: Potential Offender, Potential Target, and the Lack of Natural Guardian. He emphasized that disturbing any one of these pillars can effectively prevent crime.
According to Ghana News Agency, ASP Bamfo noted that while it is difficult to identify potential offenders-who may be close friends, customers, or even trusted individuals-mobile money agents must focus on what they can control, such as improving their physical security and operational behavior. “We are practicing proactive policing. This means preventing crime before it happens, not just reacting to it. Mobile money agents must be part of this approach by being alert, safeguarding their workplaces, and avoiding predictable routines,” he added.
Mr. Edward Ofori Agyemang, National President of MoMAG, commended the Aflao Zone for ranking third in the country in terms of membership growth, dues payment, discipline, and organizational strength. However, he expressed concern over the recurring robbery and fraud attacks that continue to threaten mobile money operators nationwide, resulting in loss of life and large sums of capital. “These challenges cannot be underestimated. We must work together to create a safer operating environment. Be vigilant, secure your business premises, avoid predictable patterns, limit the amount of cash you hold, and most importantly, insure your business.”
Mr. Agyemang also announced that MoMAG’s 8th Anniversary celebration would be hosted in Aflao this October and encouraged members to actively prepare and contribute to its success. Mr. Henyo Abednego Friday, the Volta Regional Representative of MoMAG, praised the Aflao Chapter for its dedication and commitment to the group’s vision.
The meeting, hosted by Mr. Saviour Mawuena Kofi Ahiati, Zonal Head of the Aflao Chapter, also provided an opportunity for representatives from MTN, Telecel, and Enterprise Insurance to engage with members. They offered insights into their services and the benefits available to mobile money agents. The event attracted both members and non-members of MoMAG from across Aflao and other parts of the Volta Region, making it a significant platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration in addressing the security and operational needs of mobile money businesses.
