Deputy Education Minister commissions UPSA’s ultra-modern hostel facility

The Deputy Minister of Education, John Ntim Fordjour, on Thursday, September 8, commissioned a newly constructed students’ hostel facility belonging to the University of Professional Studies, Accra.

The ultra-modern, 1600-bed hostel complex was constructed under a build-and-transfer agreement with Access Bank, and so far, the University has honoured all its financial obligations to the bank.

Speaking at a brief ceremony to officially operationalize the facility, Mr Fordjour said the government, through the Ministry of Education, is excited about the innovative approach through which the UPSA is meeting its infrastructural needs.

He noted that the University’s prudent use of internally generated funds to tackle her developmental needs was commendable and worthy of emulation.

The deputy minister charged the managers of the facility to embrace a culture of maintenance to ensure the facility is kept in a usable state at all times. He also tasked the management of the university with setting aside a dedicated fund for regular maintenance.

In explaining the rationale for the construction of the hostel, the Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, Prof. Abednego F. O. Amartey, stated that the university is committed to housing its students in a safe and decent academic environment.

He disclosed that the new hostel will go a long way towards meeting students’ residential needs, promoting diversity, integration and inclusion on campus while increasing access to education. “The University started with no hostel facility for students,” the Vice-Chancellor recounted.

“The vision of our forbearers saw the construction of the first hostel in 2010. Today, with over 20,000 students, we have added two more hostel complexes, one being commissioned today and the other almost near completion,” he said.

The ultra-modern hostel complex has facilities such as CCTV cameras, an elevator, study/reading rooms, Junior Common Rooms (JCR), a laundry area, and other auxiliary amenities.

The rooms have also been fitted with individual electricity meters to prevent waste and ensure energy conservation.
