COA-GPM launches 5-year action plan on global peace

Cape Coast, April 11, GNA – The Centre of Awareness Global Peace Mission (COA-GPM), a non – governmental, non-sectorial and non- religious organisation, has launched a five-year action plan to promote global peace.

The President General of COA-GPM, Professor Samuel Ato Duncan, launched the action plan at the Centre’s fourth public lecture on peace in Cape Coast on Sunday.

The colourful event on the theme: “Targeting Leadership Across The Globe to Achieve Global Peace,” attracted people from all walks of life, including diplomats, traditional leaders, professors in the academia, students, religious and political leaders, and personnel from various security services.

The peace project is necessitated by increasing conflicts around the world, particularly, the Russia- Ukraine war.

The action plan is expected to help combat all forms of injustices and discrimination and wars, threatening the existence of humanity.

To achieve the global peace objective, Prof Duncan said the Centre intended to divide the world into 12 regions under a 12- member council of elders with appointed COA-GPM presidents championing peace in the regions.

Peace associations and clubs will be established in the regions to take peace messages to people in their homes.

Turning on the Russia-Ukraine war, he called on global leaders to commit efforts and resources to end the war to forestall further bloodshed and displacement of people.

Prof Duncan said the project was working on engaging world leaders to end the war and optimistic there would not be a third world war.

He said according the 2015 Global Peace Index, the world wasted some 13.6 trillion as a consequence of war, which money he said could have been used to alleviate poverty in the world.

“Leadership plays a serious role and that is why world leaders need to come together so that we can bring the peace we want,” he said adding that “leadership should open their doors for us to get to them. We can save a lot of money and a lot of schools when we are able to make peace.”

Prof. Duncan said the Organisation had already procured some vehicles for the project and would need two helicopters and a private jet for its global operations.

The Central Regional Minister, Mrs Justina Marigold Assan, commended the efforts of Professor Duncan and his Organisation for the foresight and called for support from all to bring peace to the world.

She asked governments to create sustainable jobs for young people while leaders lived exemplary lives to earn the trust of citizens to avoid conflicts that could arise due to mistrust.

“We should make peace with ourselves, especially politicians,” she added and pledged the support of the Regional Coordinating Council to the project.

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr Roland Affail Monney, called on the media to focus on peace journalism to promote and maintain global peace.

He said the media must make conflict resolution journalism a top priority and provide the platform for society to contribute to peaceful coexistence.

“This is not to argue that critical media must be shut down; we must continue to investigate issues and hold government officials accountable, but we must do it with the utmost respect for peace,” he said.

“The media must tell stories, shape programmes and tailor programmes in a nonviolent manner to ensure that peace is sustained,” he stressed.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Alexander Kwami Amenyo, the Central Regional Police Commander, stressed the need for Ghana to sustain the peace it was enjoying and pledged the commitment of his administration to ensure continued peace in the Region.

He underscored the importance of peace to the accelerated growth of the country and served notice that the Police would be tough on criminals to ensure peace prevailed.
