Koforidua, May 30, GNA – Madam Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, Chief of Staff has inaugurated a two-storey Eastern Regional office complex for the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) in Koforidua.

The inauguration coincided with the launching of the 25th anniversary celebration of the regulatory body, at a colourful ceremony in Koforidua.

She commended the leadership of the PURC for the decentralization policy implemented through the establishment of Regional offices across the country, adding it would bring their services closer to the people.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission has been playing a pivotal role over the years in balancing the expectations of stakeholders including government, and the consumers in general for mutual benefits.

However, The Chief of Staff indicated that considering the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the global economy of which Ghana was no exception, there was the need to strengthen the already established mechanisms to make the utility providers financially stable.

She noted therefore that it was equally important for PURC to mainstream sustainable measures to reduce wastage by the utility providers to ensure that tariffs were affordable and acceptable to all stakeholders.

Dr Ishmael Ackah, Executive Secretary, PURC said his outfit had instituted measures to ensure that consumers and the public had the platform to report grievances and same from the utility providers for efficient service delivery.

To that end, more than 500 WhatsApp platforms had been created throughout the country to provide timely and authentic platforms to report issues from both the public and the providers and encouraged the public to make use of the PURC for their utility concerns.

The PURC was established in 1999 under the PURC Act 538, with the mandate to regulate activities of Water and Electricity services to consumers and vice versa.
