2024 Rideafrique Cycling championship slated for March 30


The fourth edition of the prestigious cycling event dubbed ‘RideAfrique’ has been slated for March 30, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium. ?

With support from the Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF), it would attract over 200 riders across the country and Africa, and it is aimed at promoting the sport and unearthing talents.

The event is also geared towards testing the endurance, strength, and strategic thinking of cyclists as well as pushing them to their limits as they strive to outperform their competitors.

Mr. Richard Agu Chief Executive Officer of Rideafrique, disclosed measures outlined to ensure the successful hosting of the event.

He said the event would serve as a platform to promote and highlight the importance of environmental conservation.

He said, ‘we have meticulously planned every aspect to ensure a seamless experience for both participants and spectators’.

?’Safety measures, including medical support and assistance vehicles, will be in place throughout the race to guarantee the well-being of t
he cyclists.’

‘The event would be held in partnership with local conservation organizations, highlighting the importance of preserving the natural beauty of the regions through which the race passes’.

In an interview with the GNA Sports, Mr. Agu mentioned that winners of the race would walk home with consolidated prizes among other products from sponsors.

He said, ‘well, we are thrilled to announce that there are incredible prizes up for grabs, including cash prizes and a home trainer set, which also includes a RideAfrique cycling Jersey.’

He said the cash prizes add an extra level of excitement to the event.

?Participants would have the chance to win a substantial amount of money, making their efforts and dedication even more rewarding.

He said, ‘whether it’s for their personal achievements or to support a charitable cause, the cash prizes will undoubtedly make a significant impact’.

The event would be expected to attract foreign cyclists from Liberia, United State of America, United Kingdom, Togo, Be
nin, Zimbabwe and Nigeria.

African Games: President elated about Ghana’s historic medal haul


President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is elated about team Ghana’s largest medal haul in history achieved at the 13th African Games, Accra 2023.

Ghana, hosting the Games for the first time (March 02-23), hauled a total of 68 medals – 19 gold, 29 silver, and 20 bronze – which is by far the largest in the nation’s history.

‘Let the success of these Games serve as a catalyst to invest further in sports development, and empower our youth to reach greater heights on the international stage.

‘You have showcased the best of Ghana to the world,’ the President noted in a congratulatory message to the contingent.

With an impressive showing before the home crowd, the country dominated the soccer events as the male U-20 and female U-20 teams both claimed gold for the host.

The hosts were also a delight to watch in the arm-wrestling events, showing their prowess by claiming eight gold medals, and making a strong presence in boxing and athletics.

Ghana finished sixth out of 53 participating nations, an improvement ov
er its 15th position in the 2019 Games in Rabat.

‘To the people of Ghana, I thank you for believing in the ability of Government to host the Games, the first time in our history,’ President Nana Akufo-Addo stated.

As the nation basked in the glory of this unprecedented success, it was necessary that stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to promoting sports as a tool for national development and unity, he noted.

‘Together, we can harness the power of sports to build a stronger, healthier and more prosperous Ghana for generations to come.’

Some 5,000 athletes participated in this year’s African Games in 30 disciplines – an increase from the 2019 African Games, which offered 26 sports. The 2015 Games had 22 disciplines.

The 30 disciplines included eight Olympic qualifying events, 15 non-qualifying and seven demonstration sports that showcased emerging trends and disciplines.

The Olympic qualifying events comprised swimming, athletics, badminton, cycling, tennis, table tennis, wrestling and triathlon.

D
emonstration sports included e-Sports, mixed martial arts, sambo and scrabble, promising what the African Union calls a ‘glimpse into the future of sports entertainment’.

One of the most significant legacies for Ghana is the construction of the new US$145 million (pound 132.5 million) Borteyman Sports Complex, which comes with a 1,000-seater Olympic-sized pool, 10-lane competition pool and an eight-lane warm-up pool.

The African Games 2023 was also seen as a form of preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games which will take place in Paris in July 2024.

The African Games, formerly known as the All-African Games or the Pan-African Games, are a continental multi-sport event held every four years.

It is organised by the African Union (AU) with the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and the Association of African Sports Confederations (AASC).

Hohoe United Football Club, others benefit from scouting tournament


The Hohoe United Football Club and three Division-2 football clubs; Nadm S.C, Hohoe Annoiting Stars and Burning Stars, have benefited from a week-long scouting tournament aimed at unearthing talents.

The European Scouts undertaking the tournament are Toure Jordan – Head Scout (Afc eskilstuna, Sweden) and Andre Paulo – representing scout (Djurgårdens IF, Sweden).

Mr John-Peter Amewu, Member of Parliament, Hohoe Constituency and Railway Development Minister, said the tournament was part of his youth and sports empowerment project for constituents.

He said it was geared towards identifying football talents that were constituents and facilitating their career progress to Europe.

Mr Amewu said they were positive that the identified players from the various teams would have the opportunity to progress their careers in Europe and be worthy ambassadors of the constituency and Ghana as a whole.

He said with the visiting scouts, they had started the process of establishing an academy and a youth team based on foot
ballers in Hohoe.

‘Hohoe has been blessed with a lot of great footballers from the past and I plan to birth a new generation of even greater footballers.’

Mr Amewu said their charge as leaders was to be a springboard for the people while their duty as political leaders was to accelerate the potential of followers.

Mr Edem Kofi Ansah, CEO, Hohoe United FC, said the scouting tournament was designed to bridge the gap between the demand that European football clubs had for African talents.

He said there was abundance of talents in Hohoe, Volta, Ghana and Africa hence the scouts embarking on such a talent hunt was commendable.

Mr Ansah said the scouts were elated about quality of players seen from the participating clubs, adding that it was the hope that scouting would be done annually to support talents in football.

Accra Sports Stadium filled to rafters as Afriyie’s screamer wins gold for Ghana


It was an atmosphere filled with enormous energy, with over 40,000 fans propelling Ghana’s Black Satellites to a 1-0 win over Uganda in the finals of the 13th African Games football competition.

Jerry Afriyie’s late strike was enough for Ghana to win gold in a pulsating encounter against the Ugandans, who battled it out to the end.

Ghana coach Desmond Sakyi Offei maintained the same starting lineup after the semi-final win against Senegal, with Abdul Aziz and Abdul Suleman leading the charge.

The Black Satellites started the game in blistering fashion, pressing their opponents for the first goal.

In fact, the Black Satelittes put the ball at the back of the net in the first half, but referee Hilary Hambaba adjudged an infringement by Uganda goalie Abdu Magada.

The Uganda goalkeeper was absolutely brilliant in the first half, making over two crucial saves to keep the score level at halftime.

Ghana started the second half on the front, with the home fans eagerly awaiting the first goal as they chanted eve
ry skill and trick from the Black Satelittes.

Afriyie was Ghana’s danger man. He nearly struck his side in front with a 25-yard strike, but his effort went wide to the relief of the Ugandan defense.

The Ugandan player had a glorious opportunity to finish off Ghana with less than a quarter of the game left but missed from close range.

Then came Afriyie, who stepped up in the 90th minute and struck Ghana into the lead with a ferocious strike.

Ghana held on to clinch the African Games men’s football trophy for the second time, having won it in Maputo back in 2011.

Egypt, Angola crowned champions in Handball at the 13th Africa Games


Egypt’s men and Angola’s women were crowned champions of the 13th edition of the African Games held at the Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra.

Egypt the current African Handball champions defeated DR Congo 33-32 to pick the gold medal, whilst Nigeria also beat Benin 38-20 for the third and fourth place respectively.

In the women’s categories, Angola remained unbeaten in this competition by defeating Burkina Faso 47 -13, Ghana 35 -13, Algeria 38-18 at the beginning of the competition, and defeated DR Congo 33 – 15 to emerged winners.

Cameroon defeated Algeria 29 – 21 for the third and fourth place respectively.

Accra 2023: Joe Paul, Cadman win gold for Ghana in track and field event


It was a flurry of gold for Team Ghana in the track and field event, as Joseph Paul Amoah and Cadman Evans Yamoah picked up gold medals for Ghana at the 13th African Games.

Joseph Paul Amoah, a former 200m national record holder, emerged victorious in the 200m men’s race with an impressive time of 20.70 seconds, clinching Ghana’s only gold on the track.

Following the disappointment of not winning gold in the 100m race and the 4x100m relay, Joseph Paul went into Friday’s pressure with huge pressure, especially having dominated the heats and semis.

But Joe Paul demonstrated his resilience as he narrowly edged Cameroon’s Claude Emmanuel Itoungue Bogognie, who clocked a time of 20.74 seconds.

Nigeria’s Consider Emmanuel picked up the bronze medal in the 200m finals after missing out on a medal in the 100m race.

It was double gold for Ghana in the men’s and women’s high jump. Cadman Evans Yamoah cleared an impressive height of 2.23m to win gold.

He replicates the success of Rose Yeboah, who earlier in the we
ek picked up gold in the women’s high jump and retained her African Games crown, having also won gold in Rabat five years ago.

This brings Ghana’s medal count in athletics at the 13th African Games to six in the track and field event.

13th African Games: World-record holder Oluwatobiloba cruises in 100m hurdle heats


Reigning women’s 100m hurdles record holder Amusan Oluwatobiloba finished first with a time of 13.03s in heat two of the women’s 100m hurdles.

Nigeria’s Amusan, who is also the reigning African Champion, was remarkable in her heat event as she dominated the race held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra, Ghana.

The two-time African Games champion was off her blocks in blistering fashion and never gave up her lead, with her opponents far behind.

The closest to her was Mozambique’s Guame Cecilia, who placed second with a time of 14.00s, while Ashley Tinashe grabbed the third automatic qualification spot.

Unfortunately for host Ghana, Mensah Doris couldn’t progress to the finals after she placed eighth with a time of 16.89s.

Amusan Oluwatobiloba looks a favourite to retain her crown in the finals events set for Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at 17:30 GMT.

Ghana’s Black Satellites to face Uganda in men’s football finals


The Black Satellites of Ghana will be in contention for gold in the men’s football competition as they face Uganda in the finals on Friday, March 22, 2024.

The Black Stars recorded a crucial 1-0 win against the Young Teranga Lions of Senegal in the semi-final encounter played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Substitute Michael Ephson produced a close-range finish in the late stages of the game as Ghana booked a spot in the finals of the men’s football competition.

It was a tough encounter for coach Desmond Ofei’s side, especially coming up against a formidable Senegalese side who were considered one of the strong favourites.

But the Satellites demonstrated their resilience and prevailed at the end of 90 minutes, replicating the final berth achieved by their female counterparts, the Black Princesses.

Ghana’s opponent in the men’s final football competition, Uganda, were ruthless in the semi-final encounter, beating their Congolese counterparts 4-2 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The final of the men’s football
competition will be played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 22, 2024, at 8:00 p.m.
