La Liga: Preview of matchday 34 games

SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to Round 34 action from La Liga, with matches scheduled to run from Friday 29 April to Monday 2 May 2022.

DStv and GOtv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.

SuperSport is also the only place to get English commentary on the legendary La Liga, where the top match for this round sees Athletic Bilbao welcome Atletico Madrid to San Mames Barria for a ‘red and white derby’.

European qualification looks beyond Athletic’s reach, but they will still be keen to put a spanner in the works for outgoing champions Atletico. The Basque club has put together a three-game unbeaten run against the capital city side, including a 2-1 win in the Spanish Super Cup in January 2022 – the teams’ most recent meeting.

“We will give Atletico respect… but not too much respect,” said Nico Williams, who scored the winning goal in the Super Cup. “We will try to win at home and claim three points. Atletico were champions for a reason, but we know we can defeat them.”

Real Madrid, meanwhile, will welcome Espanyol to Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and target another victory in their successful La Liga campaign – though goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has warned his team not to take anything for granted. “To win is very important,” Courtois explained. “We have lacked intensity at times and must make sure we correct this.”

Barcelona will welcome Mallorca to Camp Nou and look to continue the fine form they have shown under manager Xavi, who is urging his charges to keep pushing right until the end of the season. “We won and we enjoyed ourselves,” said the Blaugrana club legend. “The atmosphere was extraordinary. And we’ll keep fighting. We’re going to try. We’re going to try to win all the games.”

Another key clash sees Sevilla host Cadiz at Estadio Ram Sanchez Pizjuan for an Andalusian derby. Los Nervionenses are chasing a top-four finish and have been an excellent team under manager Julen Lopetegui, who recently dismissed links with the Manchester United managerial post for next season.

“The [speculation], I can’t help it,” Lopetegui said. “I am where I want to be. Continue on the Sevilla bench next season? I have no doubt.”

No rival can compete with SuperSport’s coverage. Our viewers on DStv and GOtv enjoy an unrivalled selection of football from around the world!

Indiscipline cause of flooding at Sakumono Railway line -Road Minister

Accra, April 28, GNA-Mr. Kwasi Amoako-Atta, the Minister of Roads and Highways, says unpatriotic activities and indiscipline are the causes of the flood situation at the Sakumono railway line.

“The Lagoon is being compromised. People are filling the lagoon (to build houses), we are scrambling for land as if the world is coming to an end tomorrow and the flood situation is a result of our unpatriotic activities and indiscipline,’’ he stated during a tour of some road projects after Wednesday’s downpour.

He said the Government was investing so much to manage the flooding in the country and said it was important the citizenry supported such efforts.

The Minister reiterated the Government’s commitment to the road sector and said systems were being put in place to ensure that roads constructed were preserved for the future.

‘‘We are going to put up about two-three downtrace to control the weight and height of vehicles. No vehicle weighing more than 10 tonnes will ply the Sakumono Railway line road. Vehicles of such weight will use the Tema Motorway. This is going to be a policy position of government almost immediately.” Mr Kwasi Amoako-Atta indicated.

The Minister urged authorities in charge of the Lagoon to ensure people did not build on the site.

“The people in charge of the Lagoon should be strong and firm in ensuring that people are prohibited from building there,” he added.

The Minister also inspected the construction of the interchange at Abossey Okai and assured the traders that, once the engineers were done with the interchange and the road construction, they would not experience flooding.

Weigh implications of your information on financial stability before disseminating – BoG to journalists

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has implored journalists to weigh the implications of their publications on financial stability before going ahead to disseminating it to the general public.

This is contained in a speech read by BoG Director of Research, Philip Abradu-Otoo on behalf of Dr. Maxwell Opoku-Afari, first Deputy Governor of the central bank at a workshop for financial journalists on Thursday, April 28, 2022, at the Ecobank head office in Accra.

Mr. Philip Abradu-Otoo said in the line of work of financial journalists, it is important that they report accurately.

He said journalists obtain information from different sources and must always draw a distinction between accurate reportage that comes from publicly available data and accurate reportage from non-publicly available information.

“As financial journalists, it is possible to come in contact with different information sets, some of which may be confidential and which, if published, could destabilise the financial system. Financial journalists, therefore, have a responsibility to carefully weigh the implications for financial stability of information they intend to publish,” Mr. Philip Abradu-Otoo said.

According to him, the media’s role in influencing the economic narrative is even more crucial during periods of heightened uncertainty.

He stressed that under such instances, the media has additional responsibilities to decide the timing of release and newsworthiness of the information at hand for accurate reportage.

In his concluding remarks, he applauded organisers of the workshop, indicating that such an event can help equip journalists with the relevant knowledge of the financial sector and the nature of risks and incentives facing the sector.

Thursday’s workshop was organised by Journalists for Business Advocacy (JBA) on the theme “Accurate reportage, key to financial stability”.

Reports indicating I’m in police custody misleading, an attempt to tarnish my reputation – Villey Acheampong

Defeated New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary hopeful for the Subin Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Villey Acheampong has rubbished reports indicating that he has failed to meet GHc700k Bail after he was charged with defrauding.

Addressing the report in a press release, Mr. Acheampong says it is not only erroneous but an attempt by his detractors to tarnish his hard-earned reputation.

“I, Villey Acheampong hereby state unequivocally that the said reportage with an accompanying photo of me is erroneous, misleading and a poor attempt by my detractors to tarnish my hard-won reputation,” he stresses in a press release.

Insisting that he is not in police custody, Villey Acheampong makes it clear that he is living a normal life just like anybody else and doing his business.

Villey Acheampong concludes, “I, therefore, call on my family, friends, business partners, and the general public to treat this denigrating publication about me with utmost contempt.”

Below is the press release:

Re: “Failed NPP PC Charged For Defrauding Fails To Meet GHc700k Bail”

My attention has been drawn to a malicious publication on Modern Ghana and other media platforms with the above heading.

I, Villey Acheampong hereby state unequivocally that the said reportage with an accompanying photo of me is erroneous, misleading and a poor attempt by my detractors to tarnish my hard won reputation.

Whilst resisting the temptation of discussing a matter which is sub-judice, it is important to put on record that it is not true that I am in police custody as mischievously put out. On the contrary, I live a normal life just like anybody else, doing my business.

I therefore call on my family, friends, business partners and the general public to treat this denigrating publication about me with utmost contempt.
