Violet, the daughter of Mr. Prince Kofi Amoabeng, started her business in 2014, at a time her father’s investments were flourishing, yet, she ventured into her own business without playing ‘the spoilt brat’ and relying on her father’s money.

After graduating from Shenandoah University with a BSc. in Accounting/Business Administration and an MBA in Business Administration in 2009 and 2011, respectively, Violet took the path of being an entrepreneur without research but ended up successful.

It is clear that as a result of hard work, creativity and consistency, she now rakes over $200,000 profits, but how well do you know her and what her establishment entails?

These are some facts about Violet Amoabeng’s skincare empire

She stumbled upon her business idea while searching for a product to soothe her dry lips

Voilet Amoabeng said she discovered how shea butter was an ‘undermined’ natural resource, and how magical the product works, in the quest to moisturize her lips one day.

Voilet, while stating that she had to ‘settle’ on shea butter at that time, said she realized how powerful it was, after consistently using it based on recommendation.

“I was looking for something to soothe my dry lips, and that was when someone recommended Ghanaian Shea butter,” she recalls. “I started using the butter on my lips and I was amazed at how effectively it worked. That’s when I realized the power of the natural ingredient and what Ghana had,” she told Face2Face Africa.

Violet’s idea transformed into the ‘Skin Gourmet’ brand; which she launched in 2014 with just $45 and now generates over US$200,000 annually.

After the shea butter success, she began experimenting with other raw food items

Voilet Amoabeng, in the quest to uncover more natural remedies for a healthy skin, started digging deep into other raw food items in Ghana

This resulted in different brands of organic skincare products that are not only certified good for the skin but healthy for consumption.

Voilet’s skincare line includes; body scrubs, cleaners, etc. and she ships to over 25 countries in the world

Through years of working hard, the young entrepreneur has built a successful business that boasts a variety of edible skincare products, including edible kinds of butter, scrubs, cleaners, oils, Humble Feasts, and more, shipped to over 25 countries across the world.

She described her entrepreneurial journey as ‘Crazy hard’

In her words, “I started with the love of making body butter without doing any research. The entrepreneurial journey has been crazy hard. It will crash you and it breaks you and stretches you but you enjoy it. When you see an obstacle and it’s hard but every time you find a way over it and that is what makes it incredible. With every stage you overcome, you become a little bit greater,” Amoabeng advised aspiring entrepreneurs.

‘There can’t be two captains on this ship’ – Jim Iyke details why his dad sacked him from home

Veteran Nigerian actor, Jim Iyke, has revealed the trials he had to endure in his father’s house because he wants to pursue his dream as an actor.

In an interview with media personality, Chinasa Anukam, Jim Iyke stated that his father sent him out of the house at a very young age because of his love for acting.

According to Jim, his father wanted him to further his education and acquire a Masters Degree after completing his first degree at age 18.

Jim added that he performed so well in school and for that reason alone, his parents wanted to steer his life to fulfill the ideal picture they painted for him.

He said: “I was a straight A student. And the course was already, I mean, you know the Igbo parents, they decide your life before you are born and probably after you die if they outlive you. I was about 18 and a half when I finished my first degree. The idea was, ‘Get your MBA.’ That was the whole plan. My dad’s boss is American, so he already had a setup. And I came home one day and said, ‘I think I really want to be an actor.’

“My dad’s fair argument then was that I’m excruciatingly shy. Now, how come you come out? A well-known introvert comes out to say, ‘You want to be an actor?’ But I think there was something—you know, call it female intuition or whatever. She (my mum) just believed, even before I did. I just saw a glimpse of something that made me believe this is what I wanted to do, but it wasn’t hard-formed.

“There was no core to it. There was no master plan. There was no road map. It was just a simple conviction. But she believed before I did. And I think that is what makes mothers as unique as they are.

Jim Iyke detailed the last conversation he had with his dad prior to his exit from home.

“It became unbearable to stay at home. So much so that one day, my dad woke up and said, ‘Listen, there can’t be two captains on this ship. You either go get this master’s going as quickly as possible. Take one year, go do whatever nonsense you want to do, come back, and then we set the course again or you leave my house.’ So I left.”

Foundation provides free skills training for KNUST students

Mama Love Foundation, an Obuasi-based Non- Governmental Organisation, has organised a skills development training for over 300 students of the Obuasi campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The training, which was put together under the ‘train the hand initiative’ of the foundation, sought to empower the students with alternative skills to make them self-reliant and employable after graduating from school.

They were trained in soap making, yoghurt making, fascinators, shower gel production, pizza, pie making, among others.

According to the Ghana Statistical Service, 25 per cent of young people between the ages of 15-35 were not in employment, education, or training across the three quarters of 2022.

The Service also indicated that about 1.76 million people were unemployed in the third quarter of 2022, and two out of every three unemployed people were female. Prior to this, data on Ghana’s youth unemployment fluctuated from six per cent to 13 per cent between 2016 and 2021.

Dr. Love Konadu, President of the Foundation, addressing the media after the training, said the focus of the Foundation was on how to empower students considering the difficulties in securing jobs after school.

She said the organisation since 2017 had trained more than 1000 people, equipped them with the skills to be self-employed and self-reliant.

According to her, finding white-collar job had increasingly become an arduous task for many Ghanaians, hence the need to equip the youth with skills that could propel them to start their own businesses.

She said governments the world over had resorted to equipping the youth with employable skills to run their own businesses and not rely on government for jobs.

‘This is what has motivated Mama Love Foundation to conduct this training for students of KNUST-Obuasi campus which is the only tertiary institution in Obuasi,’ she observed.

She advised the participants to take the skills acquired from the training seriously to set up their own businesses even while at school.

Western North gets integrated Recycling and Compost Plant

The Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP), a subsidiary of the Jospomg Group, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR) have commissioned a recycling and compost plant at Aboaonidua, near Wiawso in the Wiawso Municipality of the Western North Region.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, in September 2020, cut the sod for the construction of the project, which would receive solid waste from Sefwi-Wiawso, Juaboso, Bodi, Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai and its environs and process it into re-usable materials such as compost for agricultural and its related purposes.

Speaking at the commissioning, Mr Michael Padi Tuwor, Managing Director, Accra

Compost and Recycling Plant said the project was in fulfilment of a promise made by the President and collective efforts of various stakeholders who have supported the project from its inception.

‘Waste management challenge is not unique to our region or country, but it’s a global issue that demands a comprehensive approach; and with this facility, we are taking a significant step forward tackling the problem,’ Mr Tuwor pointed out.

He said the core purpose of the facility was to add value to waste and make it beneficial, adding that waste would no longer be collected indiscriminately, instead it would be sorted, and organic waste would be treated to provide compost for farming communities.

That, he explained, would contribute to environmental sustainability while providing valuable resources for agricultural purposes.

Mr Tuwor encouraged the beneficiary communities to actively participate in segregating plastic waste from other waste.

He said: ‘This facility is not just a symbol of progress, it’s a reflection of Ghana’s commitment to achieving the sustainable Development Goals. By adopting environmentally sustainable practices, which will contribute to the global agenda of creating a better world for everyone.’

Mr Tuwor mentioned, creation of employment opportunities, serving as recycling center, generation of revenue, learning center for students and reducing indiscriminate dumping among others as some of the benefits of the plant.

Ebusuapayin Nana Yaw Agyemang Badu, on behalf of the Paramount Chief of Wiawso commended the President for the creation of the Western North Region, since according to him, the area had benefited from various infrastructure developments, stressing that ‘our struggle for a new Region is not in vain.’

He advised the youth who would be employed at the facility to be truthful and hard working to justify their inclusion.

Mr Louis Owusu-Agyapong, Municipal Chief Executive for Wiawso Municipal Assembly, in a message on behalf of the Western North Regional Minister, said the establishment of the facility aligned with Ghana’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 6 and 9) and to improve upon the lives of the people.

He noted that the ever-growing population of the region comes with its attendant waste management challenges due to its rapid urbanization.

The Regional minister lauded the project and was hopeful that the massive investment in the project would yield positive results for the region.

He was optimistic it would go a long way to improve air, water quality, and promote the well-being of the people in the region, while serving as a research laboratory and an ecotourism center.

Don’t circumvent duty payment – GRA warns importers, exporters

The Deputy Ashanti Regional Commander, Customs Division, Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Mr Evans Teye Agbozo, has cautioned importers and exporter against the practice of bypassing systems to avoid paying all required duties. Mr Agbozo said those who engaged in such acts would be caught during a Post Clearance Audit (PCA) and would be made to pay the differences. He was speaking at a seminar on PCA organised by the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) in Kumasi on Tuesday, July 18. His comments were in response to complaints from importers and exporters regarding the financial inconveniences they faced after undergoing the PCA by the GRA. PCA is the systematic examination and verification of Customs declarations, supporting documents, and related records after goods have been released from Customs control. The process is carried out by Customs authorities to ensure compliance with Customs laws, regulations, and procedures. The objective is to verify the accuracy and correctness of the information provided by importers or exporters during the Customs clearance process. It also aims to identify any errors, omissions, or irregularities in customs declarations, such as incorrect valuation, misclassification of goods, inaccurate determination of origin, or discrepancies in quantities or weights. Mr Agbozo explained that during a PCA, Customs authorities may select specific transactions for review or conduct random checks on a sample basis. ‘They will scrutinise relevant documents, including invoices, bills of lading, packing lists, contracts, and financial records, all in the quest to assess the accuracy and authenticity of the provided information.’ Mr. Agbozo emphasised that the Customs Division of the GRA was aware of the malpractices in the duty payments and would take all necessary measures to ensure that the State received the appropriate revenue due it. The Chief Executive Officer, GSA, Ms Benonita Bismarck, in her keynote address, stated that the Authority’s aim was to ensure that importers and exporters were well informed to avoid misunderstanding between the parties. ‘We are here today to gain a better understanding of the Customs PCA regime and how to comply without disadvantaging the shipper, while also ensuring that the government receives the appropriate revenue generated from the businesses of our shippers,’ she said.
