Government to increase accessibility to National Sports College

Accra, April 25, GNA – The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) has been mandated by President Nana Akufo-Addo to expand the capacity of the National Sports College, Winneba to ensure the College spreads across the country.

This meant the government would establish more Sports Colleges across the country to beef up the human capital needed in sports development and management as well as talent identification and grooming.

This was made known by the Deputy Director of Policy Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Directorate (PPMED) at MoYS, Alhaji Sani Mohammed, during the closing ceremony of a weeklong course on sports administration and management.

The course was organised by the National Sports College, Winneba under the theme; ‘Sports Management, the Key to Sport Development in Ghana’

Alhaji Mohammed said there are plans to add educational institutions to the college and then commended the National Sports College for organizing the training programme as their mandate expected of them.

“There is also a vision to create an educational institution at the college so that young talents recruited by the college, would school there while developing their sporting talents,” he added.

He added that the Sports Ministry was working around the clock to implement the much-needed Sport Development Fund to aid the development and promotion of the least financed sports in the country.

Mr. Noah Bukari Acting Director of the College also congratulated the participants and encouraged them to apply the knowledge acquired in their various institutions to help in the development of Ghana sports.

A total of 26 participants drawn from the various sports federations attended the week’s training with Dr. Daniel Apaak from the University of Cape Coast and Dr. Austin Luguterrah from University of Ghana as resource persons.

The intermediate course had Sports Marketing, Sports Policy, Coaching, Sports Management, Change Management, Sports Event Management and Contemporary Sports Leadership as subject areas lectured.

According to the National Sports College, an advanced level of the course would be held later in the year.

Attendees were presented with certificate of participation after the course.

Hasaacas Ladies win WPL Southern zone again with three games to spare 

Accra, April 25, GNA-Women’s Premier League (WPL) defending champions, Hasaacas Ladies have won the WPL Southern Zone for the third time in a row with three games to spare.

The West Africa champions went unbeaten this season with 11 wins and four draws to pick 37 points. 

The Hasmal Ladies after beating Immigration Ladies in their match-day 15 clashes at the Gyandu Park in Sekondi, extended their lead to 37 points to win the southern zone for the seventh time. 

Hasaacas Ladies won their first Southern Zone championship in the 2012/2013 league season after which they have managed to win the championship six additional times, 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2018/2019, 2020/2021 and the 2021/2022 season. 

The “dooooo” lads are three matches away from setting an unbeaten premier league record hoping to win against Berry Ladies, Thunder Queens and Soccer Intellectuals to seal their season successfully. 

Hasaacas Ladies would clash with the yet to be known winner of the Northern Zone as they seek to defend their Women’s Premier League title. 

Coach Yussif Basigi and his charges are once again on the verge to represent Ghana in Africa if they are able to defend the title this season.

26 Sport Administrators schooled on modern trends

Accra, April 25, GNA – A total of 26 Sports Administrators drawn from the various sporting associations and organisations have been schooled on modern trends of sport administration and management.

The weeklong intermediate course had Sports Marketing, Sports Policy, Coaching, Sports Management, Change Management, Sports Event Management and Contemporary Sports Leadership as subject areas lectured.

Organised by the National Sports College, Winneba, under the theme; ‘Sports Management, the Key to Sport Development in Ghana,’ participants were urged to work with modern trends of sport management and administration if they wanted to catch up with the dynamic growth of the sports industry.

They were also told by the Resource Persons to periodically upgrade themselves when the opportunities present itself so that they could always be on top of their game.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Deputy Director of the Policy Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Directorate (PPMED) at the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS), Alhaji Sani Mohammed, applauded the participants for attending the session.

He said also commended the National Sports College for organizing the training programme as their mandate expected of them.

The Director mentioned that the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has directed the MoYS to expand the capacity of the College to ensure the College spreads across the country.

5-Member Internal Audit Committee of the NSA duly inaugurated

The new Audit Committee of the National Sports Authority (NSA) was inaugurated on Thursday, April 20, 2022, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Prof. Peter Twumasi, in his opening address expressed gratitude for the inauguration of the committee. He stated that the deferment of the inauguration was due to the delayed information of the cabinet board and the Covid pandemic. He was optimistic that the board will resume fully and execute its duty for the benefit of Ghanaians. He congratulated the nominees on their appointment.

The Director-General of the Internal Audit Agency, Dr. Eric Oduro-Osae led the swearing-in of the nominees. He tasked the members to work for the good of the authority by providing advisory roles on financial matters and assisting with self-appraisal whilst accountability is at play.

He urged the committee to offer their support to the audit unit to prepare the internal quarterly report. He stated that they can equally work with management to submit a payroll foundation report to the public committee to do a headcount and rule out ghost names.

He later advised the board to occasionally organize meetings with the Ministry’s audit committee to have a comprehensive report on which the Director-General can present to the minister.

Submit full report on national stadia for renovation,  Mustapha Ussif directs NSA

Accra,- Mr. Mustapha Ussif Minister of Youth and Sports, has directed the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Professor Peter Twumasi to submit a full report on the state of national stadia in a bid to get them in shape to host international matches.

This decision was taken following reports from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to withdraw the Baba Yara Stadium from hosting category “A” matches. 

According to Mr. Ussif’s Personal Assistant, Jamaludeen Abdullah, the Ministry of Youth and Sports was ready to begin works to renovate all national stadia in the country to be able to host international matches.

Mr. Abdullah said, “The Minister has directed the NSA Boss to present to him a full report on the state of our national stadiums in order for him to begin action to get them in shape and fit to host all international games”.

The four national stadia likely to be renovated are the Accra Sports Stadium, Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Cape Coast Sports Stadium and the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium.

Commonwealth Connections programme will support the delivery of Birmingham 2022 Games

Mr. Chikodi Onyemerela, Acting Country Director of the British Council (Ghana & Cameroon), says the Commonwealth Connections project provides educational opportunities for young people in Ghana to learn and develop a deeper understanding of the Commonwealth and its values.

Ghana has been selected among the five countries from Sub-Saharan Africa to deliver the Commonwealth Connections programme, which is co-funded by the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee and the British Council.

Six schools in Ghana, including Archbishop Andoh Basic School, Umuraniya Islamic Basic School, Adabraka Presbyterian Basic School, All Saints Anglican Basic School, Dawhenya Methodist Basic School B and New Horizon Special School, have been selected for the project.

According to Mr. Onyemerela, the programme would support the delivery of the Birmingham 2022 mission by bringing people together, improving health and wellbeing through arts and sports and offering opportunities for young people to be catalysts of change.

Speaking at a cluster event meeting where 60 changemakers were hosted at the British Council office in Accra, Mr. Onyemerela said the platform offered students an opportunity to interact and learn more about the Commonwealth and its values, as well as the arts and sports elements of the programme.

“I believe that this is in line with the aim of the commonwealth itself, which is to promote prosperity, world peace, representative democracy, human rights, and individual liberty; the pursuit of equality in opposition to racism; and the fight against poverty, ignorance, and injustice.

“I am delighted that Ghana was selected for the programme and I want to say ‘ayekoo’ to the school leaders and teachers offering guidance to these lovely young ones.

“To my dear students and changemakers, please use every learning opportunity the programme presents to enhance your knowledge, inculcate these ideals of the commonwealth, develop and improve on your artistic skills and build valuable relationships,” Mr. Onyemerela said.

The Commonwealth Games which would take place from July 28 – August 8, 2022 would witness all 72 countries within the Commonwealth participate in 20 sporting disciplines.

Black Stars to begin 2023 AFCON qualifier campaign against Madagascar 

Accra, April.21, GNA- Four-time African Champions, the Black Stars of Ghana will begin their 2023 Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers campaign in an opening game against the Barea of Madagascar on Monday, May, 30, in Group E.

The team after hosting Madagascar would travel to the Central African Republic to play their second game as they battle the side on June 14, in the quest to make their 24th AFCON appearance. 

Ghana would then take on the Palancas Negras of Angola, in their third game on September 19, and 22, before playing Madagascar and Central African Republic in the return leg encounters on 20th and 28th March, 2023. 

The Black Stars of Ghana would need to secure positive results against Madagascar, Angola and Central African Republic to make it to the 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations tournament to be staged in Ivory Coast. 

The two top teams from each group would make it to the AFCON tournament including host nation Ivory Coast who have already booked an automatic qualification. 

Ghana after performing poorly in the just ended AFCON tournament in Cameroon would hope to qualify for next year’s edition as they seek to redeem themselves to end their over fourty years trophy drought.

FIFA U17WWCQ: Twenty-two named for Black Maidens trip to Guinea

A squad of twenty-two players are scheduled to embark on the trip to Conakry, Guinea as the Black Maidens gear up for the third round of the FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup, India 2022 Qualifiers.

Baba Nuhu’s side advanced to this stage with a 4:0 aggregate win over Senegal last Month and hope to replicate another success story in the third round.

The Black Maidens would take on Guinea on Saturday, April 16 at the Stade Général Lansana Conté de Nongo Conakry, Guinea with the reverse fixture scheduled for theCape Coast stadium on April 30.
