It was an honor and a blessing to lead Black Stars to the world stage – Otto Addo

Former Black Stars coach, Otto Addo says it was an honour to lead the Black Stars to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Borussia Dortmund talent coach masterminded Ghana’s qualification to the Mundial and led the side to the tournament.

He was named as Milovan Rajevac’s successor in February 2022.

Addo was however part of Ghana’s squad that played in the 2006 FIFA World Cup and featured against the Czech Republic and against the United States of America.

At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Ghana won one game against South Korea and lost two against Portugal and Uruguay. After the Uruguay game, Otto Addo announced his departure.

Reflecting on coaching Ghana and playing on the world stage he took to his official Instagram page to post:

“16 years apart but the feeling is the same. It was always an honour and a blessing to represent the culture, hard work and the passion of our nation at the world stage. Let’s use the power of football and our love for the game to build and grow together. Ghana Osey!!!!”

World Cup 2022: England players head home after France quarter-final defeat

Captain Harry Kane said England would use their defeat by France to be “mentally and physically stronger for the next challenge” as they headed home from the World Cup in Qatar.

England were beaten 2-1 in the quarter-finals, with Kane missing an 84th-minute penalty, having earlier equalled England’s scoring record of 53 goals.

Gareth Southgate’s side left their hotel in Al Wakrah before their flight home.

“Absolutely gutted,” said Kane.

Writing on social media, the Tottenham forward added: “We’ve given it everything and it’s come down to a small detail which I take responsibility for. There’s no hiding from it, it hurts and it’ll take some time to get over it but that’s part of sport.

“Now it’s about using the experience to be mentally and physically stronger for the next challenge. Thanks for all the support throughout the tournament – it means a lot.”

Speaking about Kane’s penalty miss, former England striker Alan Shearer told BBC Radio 5 Live: “That’s the life of a centre-forward. You put yourself in those positions and it will haunt Harry for the rest of his life.”

England departed their hotel in Qatar at about 12:30pm local time and are expected to land in the UK later on Sunday.

Players waved to fans gathered outside the hotel as they boarded a coach, with midfielder Jude Bellingham taking the time to sign memorabilia.

• ‘Southgate has been amazing’

England centre-back Harry Maguire echoed his captain’s words, and also paid special tribute to Southgate, who has said he will “review and reflect” on his side’s exit with the Football Association before making a decision on his future.

Southgate, who has been England manager since 2016, has a contract that runs until the Euro 2024 finals.

“Last night hurt. Absolutely gutted. Special thanks to Gareth and you amazing fans who kept belief in me. I love my country and I hope we made you proud,” said Maguire on social media.

Under Southgate, England reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the Euro 2020 final before their elimination by the defending champions in Qatar.

“Gareth has been amazing with myself, amazing with every player in the team,” Maguire said in an interview.

“I’m sure if you asked every player in the team they wouldn’t be able to speak highly enough of him, his man-management, the way that this team has been built and developed over a period of time.

“Over the last five or six years with Gareth in charge, you can really see the development. I know being an England manager is so tough, they get every decision they make scrutinised, every squad they make, ‘he should be in’ or ‘he shouldn’t be in’. Every team he picks, ‘he should play’ or ‘he shouldn’t play’… that is being an England manager.

“He knows how to handle it. He handles everything really well and tactically he gets all the big decisions right and he has proven that again this tournament.”

Southgate was also backed by midfielder Declan Rice, who said he hoped his manager continued in the job.

“If you guys could come in and see how well everyone’s been on it, you would have thought we would have gone the whole way as a collective but for me, personally, I hope he stays,” he said.

“Obviously, I don’t know. There’s a lot of talk around that. I think he’s been brilliant for us. I think there’s a lot of criticism that’s not deserved. I think he’s taken us so, so far. Further than what people can expect.

“He got everything spot on again, it’s not on him. It’s not on him at all – the tactics were right, we played the right way.

“I really hope he stays because the core group that we’ve got and what he’s made for us, it’s so special to be a part of. I love playing under him and I love playing for England.”

Marcus Rashford was among a host of England players who posted on social media on Sunday, with the Manchester United forward promising that the Three Lions “will come again”.

Rashford was England’s joint-top scorer with Bukayo Saka in Qatar, scoring three goals.

“The last few weeks have been a rollercoaster of emotions, each and every one of our team gave everything we had to be ready for what was thrown at us, we got close, but not close enough,” he said.

“I’ll make a promise that we will come again.”

Midfielder Jordan Henderson said it was a “tough one to take”, adding “sometimes football isn’t fair”.

Earlier, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said the team was “hurting” after the last-eight defeat.

“Like all England fans we feel the pain of losing a quarter-final, along with the coaches, players and support team who are hurting this morning,” he said in a statement.

“Gareth and Steve [Holland] prepared the team exceptionally well throughout the tournament. The players were committed to winning the trophy and were very well led by Harry Kane.

“But sport can have fine margins and on the day, against the current world champions, it was not to be.

“This is a very exciting young English squad and, despite the intense disappointment of last night, they should be very proud of their performances in Qatar.

“We are incredibly proud of Gareth, the players, the coaches and the support team and appreciate all the hard work they put in.”

‘I can’t take it’ – Neymar shares emotional WhatsApp messages with Brazil team-mates after World Cup exit

Neymar publicly shared the rallying cries to his Brazil teammates following their heartbreaking World Cup quarter-final penalty shootout defeat to Croatia.

The Paris Saint-Germain star looked to have set the Selecao on their way to the last four with his extra-time opener, but Bruno Petkovic dramatically levelled the scores before Croatia triumphed 4-2 on spot-kicks.

Neymar’s PSG team-mate Marquinhos and Rodrygo were unsuccessful with their attempts from 12 yards, and the Daily Mail reports his shared exchanges with the duo, alongside the conversation with Thiago Silva.

He said on his Instagram story: “The decision to reveal the chats was made to show how much we wanted [to win the World Cup] and how united we were.

“I am Brazilian with a lot of pride and with a lot of love.”

Neymar had plenty of conciliatory words for Marquinhos as his penalty miss hammered the final nail in Brazil’s World Cup coffin.

Opening the message exchange on WhatsApp, he said: “How are you? I am here to tell you I am your fan. One penalty won’t change how I feel about you. I am always with you and you know that, I love you.

Marquinhos responded: “Hey brother, I’ve been improving little by little, just giving time to recover from all this! And you? How are you? Thank you for the message and for thinking about me man, you are so amazing, I wanted everything to go well.

“It sucks to think that penalty was an obstacle in our dream! But let’s move forward, we have to be strong, let time pass and see what football has awaiting for us.”

Neymar replied: “That’s my exact thinking, give time… more than anyone I know that EVERYTHING PASSES, good moments and bad…

“Stay strong, enjoy your family and remember that I’m not just a companion but a friend and I want you feeling well, I love you and we move on together.”

Qatar was probably Thiago Silva’s final opportunity to win a World Cup and Neymar revealed how much he wanted to win the trophy for the Chelsea defender.

He said: ‘We will have to move on man, unfortunately it’s like this! I wanted to give you this World Cup so much. You, Dani (Alves) and I all deserved it so much. But God has a purpose for us and knows everything.

Silva then responded: “Brother, it is harder than I imagined, for real! I can’t take it. I can’t believe we lost! I can’t believe it. Every time I remember I feel like crying. But I will be okay.”

Neymar took more of a paternal tone with 21-year-old Rodrygo and tipped the Real Madrid prospect for an exciting future in the famous yellow shirt.

He said: “Little Bro! I am here to tell you that you are a baller. It’s an honour to be a part of your career, to hear you call me an idol of yours and to see you rising to be a historic player for Brazil!

“Penalties are only missed by those who step up to take one, I’ve missed many penalties in my career and have learned from all of them.

“But I never gave up, I always looked for better and fought to improve myself in everything. I like you a lot, not just for you as a player but the kind-hearted and good kid you are.

“Stay strong, the critics will only make you stronger and you will remember what I have told you: ‘you will still bring a World Cup to Brazil.’ I wish you all the success in the world; shut your mind off these days, relax, and come back with everything! I’m here if you ever need me. We’re together in this.”

This was met with a heartfelt response from the man himself, and he replied: “Thank you my idol, for everything from the heart.

“I’m sorry for anything I caused and for delaying your dream, I hope you can continue with us [the national team], so we can win it together, obviously only if it is best for you! We are always together in this and thank you for the love.”

France Battles Past England as Morocco Makes World Cup History

Defending champions France edged past England 2-1 on Saturday as Harry Kane missed a late penalty in the World Cup quarterfinals, after Morocco became the first African team ever to reach the last four.

France will face the surprising north Africans in a semifinal on Wednesday, earning their place when Olivier Giroud’s header proved the difference at Al Bayt Stadium.

In a tense match, Aurelien Tchouameni’s strike opened the scoring with 17 minutes gone, but Kane brought England level from the penalty spot early in the second half.

England were the best side for large parts of the match, but Giroud scored when it mattered most, rising above Harry Maguire to nod the ball into the net on 78 minutes for his 53rd goal for France.

As England desperately searched for an equalizer, they were thrown a late lifeline when Theo Hernandez needlessly shoved over Mason Mount and the referee gave a spot-kick following a VAR review.

But Kane blasted his kick high over the crossbar, spurning the chance to send the game into extra time.

He was the first England player to sink to his knees at the final whistle, his head in his hands.

“We gave them a little ammunition with two penalties, but it is with hearts and guts that we held onto this result,” France coach Didier Deschamps said.

“It’s fabulous because it was a big match against a very good English team.

“We responded once again, it’s wonderful to reach the last four again, you have to savor it, a World Cup semifinal is quite something.”

England coach Gareth Southgate said he had told his players, “I don’t think they could have given any more.”

“They’ve played really well against a top team. It’s fine margins and things at both ends that have decided the game,” Southgate added.

Moroccan joy

Only the most fervent Morocco fan would have bet on their side reaching the World Cup semifinals before the tournament kicked off.

On Saturday, they beat Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal 1-0 thanks to Youssef En-Nesyri’s first-half header to go further than any African team ever has at a World Cup.

Morocco, ranked 22 in the world before the tournament started, have surpassed the three other African sides to reach the quarterfinals — Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2010.

Ronaldo, who came on as a second-half substitute, was unable to rescue his side and at the final whistle walked off down the tunnel wiping away tears without acknowledging either his teammates or the victorious Moroccans.

Ronaldo, 37, who with Lionel Messi has dominated world football for the past two decades, has likely played his last World Cup match after making a world record-equaling 196th international appearance at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha.

The Moroccans have wildly surpassed expectations in Qatar and coach Walid Regragui lauded the battling spirit of his injury-hit side.

“We’re drawing on all we have, we still have guys injured. I told the guys before the match we had to write history for Africa. I’m very, very happy,” Regragui said.

As their national team made history, crowds gathered in Casablanca and chanted “Qualified! Qualified!”

There were also celebrations across the Arab world and in Europe as Morocco are also the first Arab team to reach a World Cup semifinal.

“My heart will stop, what a team, what stamina, what an achievement,” Ilham El Idrissi, a 34-year-old woman, told AFP in Casablanca.

Argentina and Lionel Messi will face 2018 losing finalists Croatia in the other semifinal after the Croatians dumped out pre-tournament favorites Brazil on Friday.

The five-time champions crashed out in dramatic fashion, losing on penalties after a 1-1 draw, while Argentina survived a fightback from the Netherlands to also win in a shootout.

Brazil star Neymar said he was contemplating retiring from international football after the crushing loss, but on Saturday Brazilian legend Pele urged him to “keep inspiring us.”

“I’m 82 years old, and after all this time, I hope I’ve inspired you in some way to get this far … Your legacy is far from over,” Pele wrote on Instagram.

Neymar had equaled Pele’s official Brazil scoring record of 77 international goals in Friday’s match.

Ronaldo is the greatest footballer in history; No one can equal his record – Mezut Özi

Former German footballer Mezut Özil has tipped his former teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo as the “goat” in the history of football in the whole world.

The achievements; individual records, club records, goals and others garnered by the Portuguese icon, according to Özil, are unmatched.

He said in a tweet on Friday, December 9, that Ronaldo will continue to reign as the number football player till eternity so people must show him the needed respect.

“He is soon 38 years old – so what’s the surprise that he doesn’t score 50 goals a season anymore? Every football fan out there should be happy to have seen him playing world class football for 20 years.

“I don’t think anyone from the new generation will be able to match his numbers again. He will forever be in his own category. Everyone should show more respect to one of the greatest athletes in sports history,” he stated.

The former Real Madrid midfielder paused to address Ronaldo’s critics, saying pundits who speak ill about the five-time FIFA World Best Player just want to elevate their dead career.

Özil stressed that the media are also setting similar agenda against his former clubmate just to get clicks to their posts.

“I really don’t get where this constant negativity from the press about Cristiano comes from … The Media is just trying to get clicks, and pundits who don’t have a career anymore just want to get attention with his big name and try to make him look bad,” he said.

The footballing icon has come under huge criticism from the media, football analysts as well as many in the footballing fraternity.

They say the 2016 Euro winner is disrespectful towards club owners and coaches, a claim that heightened after Ronaldo’s recent Interview with Piers Morgan, UK-based journalist.
