AngloGold Ashanti Intensifies Road Safety Campaign Ahead of Easter

Obuasi: After a successful rollout of its flagship road safety campaign last year, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has intensified its efforts to promote safety awareness on the roads ahead of the Easter festivities. Dubbed ‘Kwan so Dwoo Dwoo,’ the campaign aims to raise awareness about the devastating effects of road crashes among drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.

According to Ghana News Agency, the initiative, also known as ‘Drive Alive, Arrive Alive,’ is part of AngloGold Ashanti’s Community Safety Programme, which is integral to the company’s 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan. The campaign is being implemented in collaboration with several key organizations, including the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, National Ambulance Service, and Safety Campaign Ghana.

Mr. Edmund Oduro Agyei, Community Relations Manager of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, emphasized the campaign’s importance during an engagement with motorists on the Obuasi-Kumasi Highway, a stretch known for its high accident rate. He highlighted the company’s commitment to safety and its efforts to foster a safer driving culture in the communities where it operates.

Mr. Agyei reported that the campaign has significantly contributed to promoting road safety and reducing accidents, particularly on the Kyekyewere-Dadwen road linking Kumasi to Obuasi, Dunkwa, and Tarkwa. The campaign has worked closely with local authorities, transport unions, security agencies, municipal assemblies, and other institutions to advocate for responsible road behavior.

Mr. Kwasi Agyenim Boateng, Ashanti Regional Manager of NRSA, endorsed the campaign’s impact and commended AngloGold Ashanti for its initiative. He noted improvements in adherence to road safety regulations among drivers on the highway and stressed the need to intensify the campaign to further enhance safe driving practices.

Despite these efforts, Mr. Boateng pointed out that the Ashanti Region still leads the national ranking in road accidents, with 626 deaths and over 4,800 injuries recorded in 2024. He called for sustained sensitization, collaboration, and enforcement of road safety laws.

Mr. Edwin Happy Ofori, the Obuasi Manager of the DVLA, praised AngloGold Ashanti for its effective collaboration with other organizations and stakeholders to promote strict compliance with road safety regulations. He emphasized that road safety is a collective responsibility requiring the involvement and engagement of institutions, organizations, and individuals alike.
