Accra- The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with four other assemblies have begun an exercise to clear squatters along the Accra-Tema motorway.
The other assemblies are Tema Metropolitan, Adenta Municipal, Ashiaman Municipal, and Ayawaso West Municipal.
Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the AMA Chief Executive, led the other Chief Executives on a three-hour tour of the area, and cautioned the squatters along the stretch to vacate the place or face eviction.
Mr Sowah expressed worry over how every available land reserved in the city has been encroached on by squatters, which was a contributing factor to the poor sanitation along the motorway and other places.
He said some of the structures to be pulled down include wooden sharks, which serves as accommodation for the squatters, mechanic shops and taxi ranks.
During the tour they saw refuse deposited on the shoulders of the motorway by private waste collectors popularly called Bola Taxis.
The entourage caused the arrest of Raphael Wenba, 35, a Beninese and Sammy Adjei, 19, a loading attendant for defecating openly.
They would be arraigned before court on Tuesday, August 21.
Awudu Yaro, a self-acclaimed chief of Cambodia, an illegal settlement was asked to ensure the immediate clearing of refuse generated at the area or else the settlement would be cleared, as part of the exercise.
