Accra: Mr Happy Agbenyenu, Executive Director of Groupstand for Peace, Growth and Development, has urged the government and relevant stakeholders to prioritize the allocation of national service personnel towards agriculture. This initiative, he said, requires a robust framework, including training programs, access to resources, and support systems to ensure the success of the nation’s young farmers.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Agbenyenu emphasized that by focusing on agriculture, Ghanaians could unlock the potential of national service personnel to transform the country’s agricultural landscape, alleviate unemployment, and create a sustainable economic future. He asserted the importance of investing in youth and the future of Ghana. The statement titled ‘Strengthening Ghana’s Agriculture Sector Through National Service Personal’ highlighted the ongoing economic challenges facing Ghana, such as escalating debt and high unemployment rates. Groupstand for Peace, Growth and Development advocates for a st
rategic shift in deploying national service personnel to the agricultural sector.
Mr Agbenyenu pointed out that Ghana possesses immense agricultural resources, yet faces significant challenges in food production and exportation. By redirecting national service personnel towards agriculture, Ghanaians could harness their energy and innovation to strengthen this vital sector, aligning with national priorities of food security and economic sustainability.
Engaging national service personnel in agriculture could help meet local food demands and reduce reliance on imports, thereby enhancing food security for all Ghanaians. Furthermore, by producing surplus food, Ghana can tap into international markets, generating foreign exchange and supporting the national budget amid the current debt situation.
Involvement in agriculture by young people would stimulate job creation, allowing them to gain experience and develop skills. This could lead to continued engagement in the agricultural sector or contributions to rela
ted industries, thereby reducing youth unemployment. Strengthening the agricultural sector is seen as a pathway to revamping the overall economy, potentially creating a ripple effect that boosts related sectors such as agro-processing, transportation, and retail, fostering economic growth.
