Accra, May 27, GNA – The spouses of Board of Governors, Directors and Staff of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group have donated an amount of GHS35,000 to support the upkeep of inmates at the Osu Children’s Home.

The gesture, which formed part of activities on the sidelines of the 2022 AfDB Annual Meetings in Accra, was to help in the improvement of the livelihoods of the children at the childcare centre.

Mrs Grace Adesina, the wife of the AfDB Group’s President presented the dummy cheque on behalf of the donors to Reverend Dr Comfort Asare, Director of Social Welfare.

She said: “In line with the vision of the AfDB to improve lives and livelihoods, we the spouses of the Board of Governors of AfDB, Directors and staff decided to contribute our widow’s mite for the running of the Home.”

She urged the children not to lose hope nor be discouraged from pursuing their goals in life; rather, they should work hard to become responsible people in future.

Mrs Adesina lauded the management, staff, and guardians for their diligence in taking care of the children and urged them to continue to love the children.

She also called on well-to-do in society and other benevolent individuals and organisations to always support the Home to operate.

On her part, Professor Angela Ofori-Atta (wife of Ghana’s Finance Minister and Chairperson of the AfDB Group Board of Governors), told the children that God gave them their family for a purpose.

She told them that: “Society loves you and there are people outside who think about you.”

Dr Asare, who received the donation on behalf of the Home, lauded the spouses of the Board of Governors, Directors and staff for their kind gesture and the decision to visit and spend some time with the children at the Home.

Madam Yvonne Norman, the Deputy Director of the Home, also expressed appreciation to the donors.

She indicated that the COVID-19 pandemic had reduced donations and other support the Home received, and described the money given to the Home as timely, as it would go a long way in the upkeep of the children.

She called for support for the Home to cater for other needs, including medical bills and allowances for the children.

The Osu Children’s Home was established in 1948 to care for vulnerable children, missing and children without families, as well as abused children in society, and provides education and skills training for the children.
