Sunyani Mrs Grace Kalira, the Guidance and Counseling Coordinator at the Sunyani Municipal Directorate of Education, has called on adolescent girls to avoid dressing to expose various parts of their bodies.

Mrs Kalira said this when she addressed a durbar of school children, parents and teachers of the St Patrick and St James Cluster of basic and Junior High Schools (JHS) to mark the annual celebration of the Catholic Education Week in Sunyani.

Programme outline during the week-long event included a talk on adolescent development, effective way of learning, career day, cooking competition and other outdoor and indoor games.

Mrs Kalira expressed concern about the surge in teenage pregnancies and urged girls to abstain from pre-marital sex.

She said girls undergo emotional, physical and behavioral characteristics during their adolescent stage of their growth and entreated parents to get closer to them in such periods.

By this, Mrs Kalira said, they would identify certain changes in their wards and give them the necessary advice and protection.

She expressed worry about the high rate of alcoholism and drug abuse among school boys and girls and entreated parents to monitor the movements of their children so that they would not join peers with questionable characters.

Madam Theresa Kyeremaa, the Headmistress of the St James School, advised parents of abuse victims to report the matter to the school authority or the Police for the necessary action to be taken.
