Acquire Skills for Future Security – Former Chief Director Advises

Accra: Mr. Augustus Kwaku Awity, the outgone Chief Director of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC), has urged salaried workers to acquire skills that will ensure their survival in the event of job loss. Speaking at a send-off ceremony in his honour, he emphasised the importance of being proactive and prepared for the future, saying it was important to acquire a skill even while in employment for the uncertainties of life and career.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Awity highlighted the significance of skill acquisition during his tenure, particularly when participating in promotion interviews. He recounted that he would often inquire about additional skills candidates had acquired, noting that a lack of skill acquisition is a common shortcoming among workers. He advised the gathering to prepare for potential unemployment by acquiring skills that could provide stability if they ever find themselves without a job.

Mr. Awity further elaborated on the role of money, suggesting it should be viewed merely as a medium of exchange. He emphasized that individuals could still achieve their goals without it, as long as they possessed the necessary skills. Throughout the ceremony, Mr. Awity received accolades for his leadership, attributing his success to the collaborative efforts of the VRCC staff and the importance of assembling a capable team.

He highlighted the qualities of effective leadership, including humility, hard work, and surrounding oneself with ambitious and honest individuals. Mr. Awity noted that integrity was crucial, sharing that both Mr. James Gunu and Dr. Archibald Letsa, the current and former Volta Regional Ministers, respected his advice during his tenure.

Mr. Gunu, the Regional Minister, praised Mr. Awity's consistent performance and expressed a desire to continue collaborating with him, even as Mr. Awity transitions into retirement, stating, "Though you're going on retirement, you've become my consultant."

The Thursday evening event featured patrons, including regional security chiefs, heads of departments, and the new Chief Director of VRCC. Attendees were treated to live band music, and Mr. Awity received citations recognizing his dedication to implementing the UNFPA Essential Services Package for survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in the Volta Region. The citation from the Department of Gender, led by Madam Thywill Kpe, acknowledged his efforts in fostering institutional collaboration and promoting dignity and empowerment for survivors.

Another citation, signed by Mr. Gunu and the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), celebrated Mr. Awity's leadership and impact during his tenure. It highlighted his compassion, humility, and commitment to humanity, which served as an inspiration and fostered meaningful connections within the community.
