NPP flagbearership race: God has blessed me to be a blessing to Ghana as president – Joe Ghartey

A flagbearer aspirant of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Joe Ghartey, has said that his desire to lead Ghana as president is not for personal gain but rather to be a blessing to Ghanaians, especially ordinary men, women and youth from all over the country.

Joe Ghartey, who is also the Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan, made these remarks after filing his nomination form to contest in the presidential primaries of the NPP on Saturday, June 24, 2023.

Addressing a mammoth crowd of supporters at the party headquarters in Accra, the experienced politician and lawyer said that politics is not about what one will get, but rather about what one can do for humanity.

Joe Ghartey said that leadership should be about “blessing people so God can bless you.”

He said he is not desperate to become the next president of Ghana but if it is the will of God, he will be the next president.

“If it is God’s will, I will be the president of Ghana. I will not force things… We, together, will transform this nation. We will take this nation to the next level. Everything that my hands have touched by God’s grace has been blessed,” he said.

Ghartey, a former Minister of Justice and Attorney General, also said that he is certain that he would be among the five contenders selected at the party’s super delegate congress slated for August 2023.

He added that the over 200,000 delegates of the NPP who would take part in the party’s primaries in November 2023 would give him the nod because he is the only person who can help the party win the 2024 elections.

Watch NPP, NDC enthusiasts ‘display’ on streets of Assin North day to by-election

The heat is building up, party candidates are lacing up their boots and enthusiasts are leaving no stone unturned as they join in vigorous campaigning ahead of the by-elections slated for Tuesday, June 27, 2023, in Assin North.

The election will ensure the selection of a new Member of Parliament for the constituency following the declaration of the seat vacant by the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

Ahead of the polls, two of Ghana’s biggest political parties have outdoored their candidates to contest in the race. While embattled former MP of the area, James Gyakye Quayson has been renominated to contest for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Charles Opoku is going on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

To show enthusiasm and to campaign for their preferred candidates, some enthusiasts from both parties took to the streets of the township, clad in the respective party t-shirts to push their candidates.

In a rather interesting video captured by Metro TV, some NPP enthusiasts took over the streets with music and dance, for their final campaign for Charles Owusu.

NDC enthusiasts followed closely after, with their own set of songs and campaign messages as they also paraded the streets.

Watch the video below:

Background:

The Supreme Court of Ghana, on May 17, 2023, ordered the Parliament of Ghana to expunge the name of James Gyakye Quayson as a Member of Parliament (MP)

Justice Jones Victor Dotse, Justice Nene Amegatcher, Justice Mariama Owusu, Gertrude Araba Torkornoo, Justice Prof. Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, Justice Yonny Kulendi and Justice Barbara Ackah-Yensu declared that Quayson was not qualified at the time he contested the election 2020 in the Michael Ankomah Nimfah vrs James Gyakye Quayson case.

According to the court, the ousted Assin North MP failed to prove that he had renounced his Canadian citizenship when he filed his nomination to contest the 2020 general elections.

Parliament subsequently declared the Assin North seat vacant, leading to the Electoral Commission of Ghana announcing a by-election on May 27, 2023, to fill the seat.

But there is still one case the former MP has to face in court after the Office of the Attorney General accused him of deceiving public officers to acquire state documents.

On February 12, 2022, the State charged James Gyakye Quayson with five counts; deceit of a public officer, forgery of a passport, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury, and false declaration.

Watch moment Akufo-Addo met Akua Donkor at NPP rally in Assin North

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo graced the final rally of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Assin North on June 25 ahead of the June 27 by-election.

He drummed support for the NPP’s Charles Opoku stating that he was by far a better candidate than James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Just as he finished his speech and was about to return to his seat, he turned only to find Akua Donkor, founder of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) behind him, spotting a cheerful look.

A surprised Akufo-Addo went on to dance along with Akua Donkor, with the latter requesting and getting a photo opportunity with the president as the teeming crowd sang along.

The Assin North by-elect came about after the ouster of Quayson as lawmaker via a Supreme Court ruling citing processes leading to his nomination as parliamentary candidate in 2020.

He has been retained as the NDC’s candidate and will come up against Charles Opoku with analysts predicting a close race that could go in favour of the NPP.

Watch highlights of Ernest Nuamah’s exceptional performance against Congo

Ghana U-23 star, Ernest Nuamah, shone for the Black Meteors in their victory over Congo at the ongoing 2023 u-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

While the team looked poor at first and seemly dominated by Congo, Nuamah was the brightest amidst the shambolic performance in the opening period.

He gave Ghana the lead in the game, arousing the team’s moment to go and win the game 3-2. Cruj striker Emmanuel Yeboah scored twice in

The 19-year-old was brilliant down the flank and tore apart his makers through the game until he got substituted inside the 90th minute.

While he exited the field, Ghana led 3-0 but Congo found their way back immediately after his substitution with two late goals.

Nuamah’s ball retention and dribbling helped the Meteors in slowing the game and whining down the clock.

Despite the late scare, Ghana held on to record the vital victory to kickstart their campaign on a good note.
