Assin North by-election: Gyakye Quayson is a liar, he can’t be trusted – Titus-Glover

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema East, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, has urged residents of the Assin North Constituency not to vote for their ousted MP, James Gyakye Quayson, in the upcoming by-elections.

According to him, Gyakye Quayson, the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is a liar and cannot be trusted.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM, on Tuesday, June 14, 2023, monitored by GhanaWeb, Titus-Glover said that the NDC candidate cannot be trusted because he lied under oath on two different occasions regarding his Canadian citizenship.

“The NDC does not like speaking the truth and Gyakye is also not a truthful person. In 2012, he came to contest in the primaries and he was disqualified. In 2016, he was disqualified. What we are now hearing is that even in 2020, he was disqualified but the powers that be in the NDC made him contest.

“In the first place, he lied on oath which is perjury. He does not speak the truth. He wants to go to parliament but he is not truthful.

“If you owe allegiance to another country, renounce it before you can become an MP, is this a difficult thing to do? Why were you disqualified after two different attempts?… so, Gyakye Quayson and the NDC are liars,” he said in the Twi dialect.

He, therefore, urged residents of Assin North to vote for the candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Charles Opoku, in the upcoming by-elections.

Titus-Glover, a former deputy minister of transport, described Opoku as someone who has been with the residents of Assin North and understands their issues and not someone who lives abroad and comes to the constituency once every ten years.

Background:

The Supreme Court of Ghana, on May 17, 2023, ordered the Parliament of Ghana to expunge the name of James Gyakye Quayson as a Member of Parliament (MP)

The apex court of the land ruled that Quayson was not qualified at the time he contested the election in 2020 in the Michael Ankomah Nimfah vs. James Gyakye Quayson case.

According to the court, the ousted Assin North MP failed to prove that he had renounced his Canadian citizenship when he filed his nomination to contest the 2020 general elections.

Parliament subsequently declared the Assin North seat vacant, leading to the Electoral Commission of Ghana announcing a by-election on May 27, 2023, to fill the seat.

Assin North by-election: NPP candidate reportedly paying light bills of residents

The Assin North Constituency is now the centre of attention in the world of politics in Ghana because of the ensuing parliamentary by-election in the constituency.

Bigwigs in the two leading political parties, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have trooped to Assin North canvassing for votes.

Reports indicate that the two parties are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to win the Assin North seat which was declared vacant after the NDC candidate, James Gyakye Quayson, was ousted from parliament following a ruling by the Supreme Court of Ghana that he was not qualified to contest in the 2020 election.

While the NPP government is doing its part to ensure that its candidate, Charles Opoku, wins the election, which is scheduled for June 29, 2023, by continuing the stalled projects in the constituency, the candidate himself is not sitting aloof.

According to a news report by Okay FM, Charles Opoku is now paying for the renewal of the National Health Insurance Cards (NHIS) as well as the registration of new users.

The report added that Opoku is also paying off electricity tariff arrears owed by residents he visits.

“Charles Opoku is registering the constituents to the National Health Insurance Scheme. Aside from that his campaign team is moving from house to house and if you owe electricity tariffs, they will pay it for you,” the UTV Central Regional correspondent, Ibrahim Dadzie, said in Twi.

It is not clear whether the actions of the NPP candidate, if are true, amount to vote buying.

Bawumia is the ‘most active’ vice president under this 4th Republic – Prof. Smart Sarpong

Prof. Smart Sarpong, a Senior Research Fellow of the Kumasi Technical University, has touted the credentials of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia who wants to become the Presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is among ten candidates vying for the NPP flagbearer position.

He is however faced with a tough competition from particularly the former Trade Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, who has filed his nomination to contend the position.

Speaking on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Prof. Smart Sarpong noted that Dr. Bawumia is the only active Vice President under the Fouth Republic of Ghana.

He expounded that from the days of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings till now, there has been no record of any Vice President who has worked as effectively as Dr. Bawumia has done.

“Whether you like it or not, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the most active Vice President ever…From the era of President Jerry John Rawlings till date, we can boldly say he is the most active Vice President ever,” he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi.

Prof. Smart Sarpong advised any person who is fortunate to become Vice President of the nation but claims to have been rendered idle because the President isn’t giving him or her work to do, to take a cue from life and hard work of Dr. Bawumia who he stated didn’t have to wait to be given work to do but rather has created his own projects to advance the vision of the President.

“He wants to be relevant by creating, leading some of the initiatives and then executing it to show that these things are possible. He doesn’t have to be President before he leads some of the things he is leading…He’s done it and done it very well!”

‘Dragging a woman like that makes no sense’ – Shatta Wale ‘barks’ at FDA over arrest of drug peddlers

Award winning dancehall artiste, Charles Nii Armah Mensah popularly known as Shatta Wale has described as mindless the manner in which some female drug peddlers arrested by the Food and Drugs Authority were handled.

According to Shatta Wale, while the initiative to clampdown on peddlers of unregistered drugs is laudable, the arresting officers were inhumane and insensitive in the act by dragging the handcuffed suspects.

“It’s a good initiative but dragging a WOMAN like that makes no sense.

“These are women, for God’s[SIC] sake let’s know how to run this country .

‘Diamond Appiah could’ve silently poisoned Tracey Boakye if the audio had not been leaked’ – Christiana Awuni

Kumawood actress, Christiana Awuni, has expressed that Naana Brown’s expose on Diamond Appiah has helped unravel the latter’s true personality, adding that it will also compel people to take caution around her.

She made these statements while reacting to Naana Brown’s act of leaking a series of audios where Diamond was heard spilling some damning allegations about her best friend, Tracey.

One can recall that social media went wild after Diamond was heard in the viral audios, making a mockery of Tracey Boakye’s marriage whiles describing her as a ‘fake friend’ and a clout chaser.

In the said audios, Diamond also recounted how she and Afia Schwarzenegger deliberately boycotted Tracey’s baby christening in Kumasi among others.

However, sharing her thoughts on the issue which has been described as a massive betrayal, Christiana Awuni said Tracey would’ve been silently poisoned by her so-called friends if the audio had not been leaked.

Christiana Awuni, who doubles as Tracey Boakye’s ‘godmother’ said, the development has exposed the true character of the sort of individuals Tracey tagged as friends.

“You see this issue about Diamond Appiah, If the videos had not been released, Tracey wouldn’t have known her enemy. She wouldn’t have known that the people she called friends never loved her.

“She wouldn’t know that they were backbiting and stabbing her in the back. Tracey would’ve maintained the perception that her friends love her until she poisoned one day and nobody will know who did it. Nobody would’ve even suspected any of her friends if this audio wasn’t out,” she stated in an interview with Adepa TV.

She, however, asked those chastising Naana Brown for leaking the audio to desist from it adding that it was destined to happen.

“If Naana Brown had not leaked the audios we wouldn’t have known how Tracey’s friends, particularly, Diamond feel about her. Whatever happens, is for the good of it. Those insulting Naana and chastising her for releasing the audio should know that it is for the best. God has his own way of unraveling things. When it is time for a secret to come out, nobody can stop it,” she added.

Christiana Awuni also established that she has drawn personal lessons from the entire development.
