NDC Elections: Haruna Iddrisu next in line for the presidency – Wontumi claims

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Bosiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has hinted that the leader of the minority caucus in parliament, Haruna Iddrisu is next in line as NDC presidential aspirant.

In an interview on Wontumi TV, Wontumi stated that Haruna Iddrisu will be the NDC’s flagbearer in years to come and that Okudzato Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu also stands a chance of becoming his running mate if he plays his cards well.

“See, Mahama will lose in the 2024 elections, so, Okudzato Ablakwa has to be humble so that when Haruna Iddrisu is becoming a flagbearer he will consider you as his running mate. But now you’re tarnishing your image. Mahama cannot come again. He has already been president and vice so that’s the end for him,” Wontumi said.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman went on to say that if Haruna Iddrisu is elected as the NDC flagbearer, they will lose two consecutive elections before gaining a chance at the presidency.

Ashanti region NPP chairmen call for early congress

The Ashanti Region New Patriotic Constituency Chairmen Association have called on the party to hold its flagbearship election early.

According to the association, if the election is conducted early, it will give them enough time to prepare and market the party’s flagbearer before the 2024 elections.

In a press release, the group also indicated that another reason they want an early congress is to afford the party enough time to resolve outstanding conflicts and challenges resulting from the elections.

They added that a formal petition will be presented to the National Executive Committee (NEC)for consideration.

ASHANTI NPP CONSTITUENCY CHAIRMEN ASSOCIATION CALLS FOR EARLY CONGRESS

WE THE Ashanti Regional Constituency Chairmen Association would like to add our voices to the call for the party to organise early congress to elect the flagbearer for the 2024 general elections.

There is no doubt that the 2024 elections will be a crucial one which will require comprehensive processes and preparations.

Our decision to support this call for early congress is therefore based on a number of valid and genuine considerations.

Some of these include:

1. An early congress will afford the party enough time to prepare and market the eventual winner and flagbearer ahead of the elections. This will help ensure that we do not repeat the 2008 experience which gravely affected the party leading to its eventual defeat.

2. As expected in any democratic electoral process across the world, elections like these have the potential to foment internal rifts and troubles amongst supporters of opposing candidates, therefore an early congress will afford the party the opportunity to address some of these fallout and build united front to achieve victory.

3. We also believe that an early congress will afford the party enough time resolve outstanding conflicts and challenges resulting out of the elections.

4. An early congress will also give government and the sitting President the peace of mind to implement its policies and programmes, whilst carrying the entire party machinery along.

In conclusion, we members of the Ashanti Regional NPP Constituency Chairmen Association will present a formal petition to the National Executive Committee (NEC) for consideration in the upcoming meeting slated for January 31.

I never donated giant ludo to my constituents – Deputy Majority Chief Whip

Deputy Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament (MP) for Tolon Constituency, Hon. Habib Iddrisu has denied claims he donated giant ludo to his constituents.

The image of some youth posing behind the Ludo with various captions has gone viral on social media suggesting the lawmaker had donated them as part of youth empowerment.

Tolon Constituency Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress(NDC), Dr. Seidu Fiter first posted the image with the caption “Some constituency executives of the NPP in Tolon donates two “giant” ludo’s to a youth group in Zantani, indeed all our problems are solved!

Subsequently, others shared the same image and drew in the MP saying “NPP MP for Tolon Constituency donates Ludo to support youth development. The youth leaders thanked the MP for donating something that will go a long way to improve their lives”

But when reached for comments, Hon. Habib Iddrisu denied ever donating any Ludo to youth of Zantani which is one of the overseas communities in the constituency.

“I went to Zantani to commission electricity, the area is an overseas community in my constituency and they are mostly farmers. My Youth Organizer gave them the Ludos upon their request. I had no idea those items were even delivered only for some NDC folks to try to make propaganda out of it”, he responded

It would be recalled that some weeks ago, Alhaji Habib Iddrisu has hooked five deprived communities in the Tolon District of the Northern region to the national grid.

The gesture he said was in fulfillment of a promise made to the communities when they made an appeal to him during one of his community engagements within the Tolon Constituency.

He reiterated his resolve to ensure that most communities that are still without electricity are hooked in order to improve on the living standards of residents as well as enable students to study at night.

The beneficiary communities include; Zantani, Gunsibong, Shaharu Kuraa and Naa Kuraa.

Thomas Partey isn’t good enough to do what Casemiro does, says Rio Ferdinand

Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand says Casemiro is an intelligent and a better player than Thomas Partey when the two midfielders are compared.

Both players have been pivotal for their respective clubs in the ongoing Premier League season.

The aforementioned midfielders faced each other several times in the Madrid derby in Spain, when Partey played for Atletico Madrid and Casemiro lined up for Real Madrid.

Partey, who is Ghana’s deputy captain is expected to feature against Manchester United on Sunday at the Emirates as Arsenal hope to continue their fine run with Casemiro expected to sit out due to suspension.

Ferdinand acknowledged the importance of both players to their teams but said Casemiro is on another level.

“I think the importance to their teams…you could argue both sides quite equally. But then, when you through the stats in Casemiro wipes him away,” the former Manchester United defender said on his podcast, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

“No, no no. I don’t think Partey is good enough defensively to do what Casemiro is doing, I don’t think he has the impact defensively for Man United, on the ball he’s doing more.”

“On the ball, he’s [Partey] doing more. He’s dictating play for Arsenal. He’s actually playing passes I didn’t know he had. His passing has been unbelievable.”

Arsenal are currently eight points above Manchester United on the Premier League table and could further extend their lead at the top if they beat the Red Devils this weekend.

Speaking at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in Dubai, Nana Akufo-Addo remained hopeful things will get better in Ghana.

“We are working to grow the economy to a much faster rate this year our target being a 5.6 percent GDP growth rate. To enhance the prospect of a win-win situation for the private sector and the country in our case, we see our collaboration with the IMF to repair in the short term our public finance and give credibility to our balance of payment which has taken a severe hit in very recent times.”

“I am very confident that we will emerge from this as a stronger and more resilient economy and advance towards our goal of reaching the Ghana Beyond Aid [agenda].”

The government in December 2022 reached a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as part of processes leading to a bailout.

Ghana is seeking to secure $3 billion from the IMF to complement the revenue shortfalls and to service its external debt.

Ghana has gone to the IMF for the seventeenth time seeking to get help to solve the country’s balance of payment challenges.

Today in History: Akufo-Addo not in charge of the economy – Lecturer

Political Science Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Jonathan Asante Okyere, in August last year averred that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was not in charge of the economy.

He added that President Akufo-Addo’s promise to bring the economy back on track was far from reality.

“People have made all manner of suggestions to the president to help save the economy from total collapse yet the president is not heeding to all these advice,” he said.

His comment was on the back of the economic crisis in recent times.

A Political Science Lecturer at the Cape Coast University (UCC) in the Central region has said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is not in charge of the Economic Management Team, therefore, “his promise to bring back the economy is far from a reality”.

Jonathan Asante Okyere is of the view that the president is not in charge because he does not pay heed to many of the suggestions and ideas that have been thrown at him by all level-headed and well-meaning personalities in the country.

“People have made all manner of suggestions to the president to help save the economy from total collapse yet the president is not heeding to all these advice,” he said.

He explained that the way the economy is going down by the day does not even suggest there is an Economic Management Team in place.

Mr Okyere said many level-headed people have suggested to the president to as a matter of urgency sack his Finance Minster but he is unrelenting.

The university don said these on Accra 100.5 FM’s mid-day news on Friday, August 19, 2022.
