Monetisation of party branches will affect NDC’s future — Henry Ametefee

Ho, Nov. 13, GNA – Mr Henry Ametefee, the Volta Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for strategies to sustain the Party without compromising its structures through monetisation.

He said monetisation of the branches showed a bleak future for the Party and should be addressed.

Mr Amertefee, addressing the regional delegates conference in Ho, said the leadership should take the issue seriously to save the Party.

He said the NDC had grown stronger despite election era intimidation and militisation of the Volta Region and noted the role of data in the success story.

“Today’s political arena has changed. Data is speaking now and for the first time in the region, data was used”.

Mr James Gunu, the NDC Regional Secretary, said the digitisation innovation would help correct collation errors as occurred in the 2020 elections.

He said split voting patterns affected the election successes of the party and should be corrected.

Donor fatigue made it difficult to get funding for party activities, he said, and commended present and past members of parliament and executives for the continuous support.

Leaders of the Party present, including Mr Edward Doe Adzaho, former Speaker of Parliament, and Mr Daniel Agbodakpi, a former MP, also condemned the monetised electioneering, and cross-party voting.

More than 700 delegates voted to elect leaders for 15 positions from among 52 contestants.

There was about a two-hour delay due to the late arrival of delegates.

Mr Doe Adzaho donated GHC10,000 towards the congress, while Ernest Agbeshi, MP for Ashaiman, gave GHC20,000.

Sandbar blocks Anyanui – Ada Foah channel, communities appeal for help

Anloga-Anyanui (V/R), Nov. 13, GNA – Coastal communities along the Anloga–Anyanui channel of the Volta Lake are appealing for help after a sandbar blocked the channel linking the area to Ada-Foah in the Greater Accra Region, an important trading route for thousands of people.

Due to the blockage, the river from Anloga through to Anyanui in the Volta Region is unable to flow into the Gulf of Guinea, and this has affected fishing and livelihoods in these communities.

“The sandbar came up following the 2021 tidal waves and flooding that buried a community near the now disappeared Fuveme,” Mr Jasper Agbanator, the Assembly Member of Agbledomi in the Anloga District, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Saturday.

He said residents of Agbledomi, although about eight kilometres from the site of blockage, were also feeling the brant as their economic activities had been affected.

“We have done everything to draw the authorities’ attention to this situation without success. In fact, we recently sent a letter to the Volta River Authority pleading for help to dredge the area for free flow of water into the ocean, but to no avail,” Mr Agbanator said.

“Help has not come from anywhere for more than a year despite several reports about the blockage. And to make it worse, a new sandbar is forming at the Volta River Estuary, further worsening the situation upstream.”

He appealed to the Government to assess the situation to prevent another sandbar formation, which could block the estuary and hamper its flow into the sea.

Corroborating the incident, Torgbui Azametsi III, the Chief of Agbledomi, said unable to flow, the river had blackened affecting fishing activities as fishers relied on the free flow of water through the Ada-Foah area for their catch.

“The river is now full of mosquitoes and the mangroves are also being affected,” he said, and called on the Government to go to their aid.

He said the elders had informed Torgui Sri III, the Paramount Chief of Anlo, about the problem but yet to receive any update.

Mr Muntaka Chasant, a Researcher and a Climate Change Activist, who visited the community to document how climate change is reshaping the area, said he was surprised at the sandbar blockage, which had persisted for more than a year without help.

“I was here in December 2021 and January 2022, when I witnessed about 200 desperate men from Dzita to Anyanui using their bare hands and shovels to dig through the swamp to create a small inlet for the blocked river to flow into the Atlantic Ocean.”

“Fishermen in Agbledomi showed me scenes of mass crab and fish die-offs as a result of the blockage.”

“A 68-year-old man, Keki Hagba, and father of 12, who was using his bare hands to dig through the mud for the water to flow, asked me a heart-breaking question; ‘what have we done to you folks in the city to deserve this neglect?’”

Mr Chasant said those communities were ground-zero for climate change and had contributed little to nothing to the world’s carbon footprint yet were in the throes of the chaos and left to fight the effects on their own.

“The affected communities are examples of climate-fuelled disasters and must be compensated by the world’s biggest climate polluters,’’ he said, and reiterated the urgent need for the government to intervene.

“If anything, these communities deserve climate reparations from the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitters to fund disaster risk reduction and adaptation.”

He urged the Government to impress on rich polluting nations and corporations at the ongoing COP27 to honour pledges to support communities in Ghana and the Global South devastated by flooding and other disasters fuelled by climate change.

Boxing legend Azumah fumes over WBC’s decision to award Fenech title

Accra, Nov. 13, GNA – Ghanaian boxing legend Azumah Nelson says reversing decisions from past bouts is a dangerous precedent in professional boxing.

His assertion comes after the World Boxing Council (WBC) retroactively adjudged Jeff Fenech the winner of his first bout with Azumah Nelson in 1991.

The Australian boxing legend was retroactively awarded the WBC Super Featherweight title at a WBC convention in Acapulco, Mexico, last Tuesday.

Azumah, in his response, was disappointed with the verdict by the WBC, which was happening for the first time in professional boxing.

“Reviewing results and awarding titles to boxers many decades after a fight is a dangerous precedent. This is happening for the first time in professional boxing, and they decided to start with me.

“I am not worried about the decision, as it doesn’t change my legacy in boxing history, nor would it change anything going forward. If this will help Jeff Fenech to sleep well at night, I am happy for him,” the “Professor,” as he is affectionately known, said.

Azumah added that this precedent would open the doors for many boxers to petition the WBC on grounds of disagreement with judges’ decisions years ago, and this, according to him, would not add any value to the sport of boxing.

“This has the proclivity to create credibility issues for the sport if not managed properly. If the WBC wants to introduce a review panel or Video Assistant Referee (VAR) as done in football, I would think they start with the current generation, who would then have the opportunity to fight again or have the belt returned to the right winner and be contested for.

“This decision by the WBC means I went to Australia in 1992 as a challenger and not the champion going to defend his title. This is very interesting,” he stated.

Azumah further appreciated all who took to social media to vent their dissatisfaction with the WBC decision and assured them that he was not perturbed about it.

Army Ladies end Hasaacas Ladies’ five games unbeaten run

Accra, Nov.13, GNA – Security side, Army Ladies handed southern zone leaders, Hasaacas Ladies their first defeat of the season with a 2-0 win at the El Wak Sports Stadium in match-day six of the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League (WPL) on Saturday.

Goals from Nancy Opoku and Erica Appiah did the magic for the ladies in green to record their third win of the season in a grand style.

Tagged as the favorites, Hasaacas Ladies started the game with their usual possession, holding most of the balls in their half before releasing it to Doreen Copson and Fidous Yakubu up front.

The ladies in green, Army Ladies showed some level of fighting spirit as they managed to send a message to the Doo Ladies in the early minutes of the game with their sharp counter-attack anytime they got hold of the ball.

Nancy Opoku was fast on the wings to convert a solid pass in the 18th minute of the game to put her side in the lead, beating the defence of Hasaacas Ladies with her skill play to make the game 1-0.

The security side kept the game on a low as they cemented their defensive line, giving the Doo ladies no space to get the equalizer in the 30th minute of the game.

The shock on the face of Hasaacas Ladies Coach, Mustapha Fudail sent a signal that Army Ladies were indeed pulling a surprise on a cloudy Saturday afternoon as the visitors kept on pushing hard to get the equalizer.

Missing the likes of Doris Boaduwaa, the Sekondi-based side struggled to covert some open chances which could have gotten to them into the game but their efforts were in vain.

Just as the center referee, Atampugbire Audrey Awalama was about to blow her whistle to end the first half of the game, Erica Appiah of Army Ladies could not wait to increase the woes of the zone leaders with a superb goal in the 45th minute to end the first half 2-0.

The second half began on a good note for Hasaacas Ladies as they mounted pressure on the defense of the home team who were right on time to clear their lines anytime the visitors approached.

The pairing of Rakia Aryeequaye and Sarah Kulible was all Army Ladies’ goalkeeper, Evelyn Yeboah needed to grab a cleansheet against a top side like Hasaacas Ladies.

Hasaacas Ladies were held by coach Joseph Akeem Anyare’s Army Ladies side till the center referee blew the final whistle to put the game to bed.

Hasaacas Ladies have now lost their first game of the season after six matches played and would hope to redeem themselves in their next clash against Soccer Intellectuals who have not been impressive so far.

Army Ladies on the other hand have now moved to 11 points in six games played and would also face Essiam Socrates Ladies next week.
