It’s unfair to put a five-year ban on construction of LPG stations – Former Energy Minister

A former Energy Minister, Dr. Kwabena Donkor has described as unfair government’s decision to put a five-year moratorium on the construction of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) stations across the country.

The former Minister who is also the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Pru East Constituency in the Bono East Region said this in an interview on the 505 evening news analysis programme on Accra-based Class 93.1 FM on Tuesday, August 2, 2022.

He said the decision to put a moratorium on the construction of LPG stations was a knee-jerk reaction to the safety concerns raised by some members of the public about the gas explosion at Atomic Junction’s LPG station in the Greater Accra Region in 2017.

According to him, it will take about $500,000 to acquire land to put up an LPG station in Accra “and after acquiring the land and erecting all the equipment, you are asked by the government to leave it for some five years because of some safety challenges which has not been addressed by the government. It’s worrying”.

He was of the view that the government has been slow in taking action on some of the safety measures to guide the industry in the country.

The Ranking Member on the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy and Mines called on the government to do the needful by coming out with safety measures to guide the industry and lift the moratorium.

He pointed out that even though members of the Gas and Petroleum Tanker Drivers Association of Ghana have not petitioned the Minority over their concerns, they have legitimate concerns, especially about the lifting of the moratorium looking at the investments made in the construction of some of these stations.

‘Up your lobbying skills for more developmental projects’ – Asante Youth Association tells Ashanti MPs

A member of the Asante Youth Association (AYA), Osei Kofi Acquah says Ashanti region Parliamentarians need to up their lobbying skills to bring developmental projects to the region.

He said the MPs have failed to lobby for developmental projects to the region despite its contribution to the economic development of the entire country.

Osei Kofi Acquah, who is also the National Youth Organizer for the Convention People’s Party (CPP), was contributing to a panel discussion on Otec FM’s political show “Dwabrem” on Tuesday, August 2, 2022.

His comment came after the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II demands that the region being the stronghold of NPP deserves more developments from President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government.

Osei Kofi Acquah backing the Asantehene statement wondered why the region that has won political power for the ruling NPP was completely neglected by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He was of the view that the MPs should not wait for the occupant of the Golden Stool to remind the government of its promise to develop the region.

This, he blamed the Ashanti MPs for their selfish interest and failure “to lobby developmental projects to the region”.

“The Ashanti region has stood loyal to the NPP in winning political powers for the NPP, in addition being the hub of agricultural raw materials and natural resources like gold, timber and bauxite among others, but the region is yet to benefit from the share of the national cake.

“The Majority Leader in Parliament, Hon Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu should take the lead blame for his inability to site even one project in his Suame constituency. The other MPs have also followed suit and done nothing for their constituencies,” he told the host, Dr Cash.

He warned that “the pelting and throwing of sachet water to Hon Kyei Mensah Bonsu in his constituency recently must be replicated to the other Ashanti MPs to awake them to their senses, even if we have to whip them.”

Read below the full statement:

I wish to add my voice to scores of the youth in NPP who are calling on the National Executives of the party to appoint Mr. Kwabena Frimpong as Deputy National Youth Organiser of the party.

The call to appoint Mr. Kwabena Frimpong aka suarez as Deputy National Youth Organiser is very timely and it is in the best interest of the party.

I have observed Kwabena for the short period that I have come into contact with, and I strongly believe that his appointment as Deputy National Youth Organiser to partner SM will help to prosecute the youth agenda of the party to break the 8.

Kwabena relates very well with the youth of the party, and I am much convinced that he will be a perfect match for SM.

Kwabena has a deep sense of intelligence, integrity and humour, and will easily affect you with his political experience whenever you meet him.

Suarez as he is popularly known and called by the youth of NPP is very versatile, approachable, easy going and above all adjustable to situations.

Many of NPP youth know Kwabena to be humble intelligence and a team player these are the key characteristics needed to appoint one in an assisting role.

Kwabena’s appointment as Deputy National Youth Organiser will undoubtedly help to resuscitate and revive the spirit and interest of the youth in NPP who now feel rejected and dejected.

Kwabena Frimpong has paid his dues, he has sacrificed a lot as youth activist for the party, it therefore does not come as a surprise to hear the youth in NPP calling on the National Executives of the party to appoint him as the Deputy National Youth Organiser.

Having distinguished himself very well on the previous positions held within and outside the party, I have no iota of doubt in my mind that Mr. Kwabena Frimpong will perform this role too creditably well when appointed.

Kwabena has demonstrated enough intelligence, humility, loyalty and integrity over the period that he has served the party, and has what it takes to partner the National Youth Organiser to organise and mobilise the youth.

The organisational skills of Kwabena Frimpong in our various educational campuses is something that cannot be compared with.

I pray and hope that the National Executives of NPP led by Chairman Stephen Ayensu Ntim will consider the cry of the youth in NPP and appoint Kwabena Frimpong as Deputy National Youth Organiser of NPP to work with SM to break the 8.

Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan; Violation of one-China principle-China

Accra, Aug. 3, GNA – China says the visit of Mrs Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, to China’s Taiwan region is a serious violation of the one-China principle.

A statement issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, copied to the Ghana News Agency, said the visit was also a violation of the provisions of the three China-US joint communiqué.

It said on August 2, in disregard of China’s strong opposition and serious representations, Mrs Pelosi visited China’s Taiwan region.

It noted that the visit had a severe impact on the political foundation of China-US relations, and seriously infringed on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“It gravely undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and sends a seriously wrong signal to the separatist forces for “Taiwan independence”.”

The statement said China firmly opposed and sternly condemned this and had made serious démarche and strong protest to the US.

“There is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, and the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China,” it said

“This has been clearly recognized by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 of 1971.”

It noted that since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, 181 countries had established diplomatic relations with China based on the one-China principle.

It said the one-China principle was a universal consensus of the international community and a basic norm in international relations.

The statement said in 1979, the US made a clear commitment in the China-US Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations — “The US of America recognizes the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal Government of China.”

It said within this context, the people of the US would maintain cultural, commercial, and other unofficial relations with the people of Taiwan.

It said Congress, as a part of the US Government, was inherently obliged to strictly observe the one-China policy of the US Government and refrain from having any official exchanges with China’s Taiwan region.

It said China was all along opposed to the visit to Taiwan by US congressional members, and the US executive branch has the responsibility to stop such a visit.

It said since Speaker Pelosi was the incumbent leader of the US Congress, her visit to and activities in Taiwan, in whatever form and for whatever reason, was a major political provocation to upgrade US official exchanges with Taiwan.

“China absolutely does not accept this, and the Chinese people absolutely reject this,” it said.

It noted that the Taiwan question was the most important and most sensitive issue at the very heart of China-US relations.

It said the Taiwan Strait was facing a new round of tensions and severe challenges, and the fundamental cause was the repeated moves by the Taiwan authorities and the US to change the status quo.

It said the Taiwan authorities had kept seeking US support for their independence agenda; saying they refuse to recognize the 1992 Consensus, go all out to push forward “de-sinicization”, and promote “incremental independence”.

“China and the US are two major countries. The right way for them to deal with each other lies only in mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, no-confrontation and win-win cooperation,” it said.

“The Taiwan question is purely an internal affair of China, and no other country is entitled to act as a judge on the Taiwan question.”

It said China strongly urges the US to stop playing the “Taiwan card” and using Taiwan to contain China.

It urges the US to stop meddling in Taiwan and interfering in China’s internal affairs; adding that it should stop supporting and conniving at “Taiwan independence” separatist forces in any form.

Dormaa Central NDC takes steps to weed out?disloyal?members ?

Dormaa-Ahenkro (B/R), Aug. 3, GNA – The Dormaa Central Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has introduced some measures to weed out disloyal members to make the Party stronger to win the parliamentary seat in 2024.

Mr Dominic Adomah, the Constituency Organiser, said this in an interview with Ghana News Agency at Dormaa-Ahenkro in the Bono Region about the progress on the Party’s re-organisation and preparations toward branches executives’ elections.

He said the issue of uncommitted constituency executives was identified as one of the Party’s major challenges and threats to building a winning team capable of taking the seat in the 2024 parliamentary election.

To this end, Mr Adomah indicated the Party had mapped out effective strategies to break the more than 20 years of dominance of the New Patriotic Party in the constituency by strengthening the checks and balances surrounding registration processes to make it difficult for unfaithful people to use dubious means to get their names on the register.

He said as a Party that was formed out of a revolution and brought democracy to the country in 1992, it had embraced the idea of working with democratic principles such as probity, accountability and transparency.

Mr Adomah said the Party was thus aggressively tackling the phenomenon where members “crossed carpet” to the ruling NPP but still posed as committed members by ensuring only those registered would be allowed to vote and contest for executive positions.

He said about 3,500 cards had been issued to registered members across the 135 branches in the constituency, adding the team in charge of the registration visited every branch during the registration process and the Party’s challenges were identified.

He said the branch elections would be held on Monday, August 8, 2022, to be followed by the constituency election at a date yet to be fixed.

President Akufo-Addo sets to commission Sunyani Airport?

Sunyani, Aug. 3, GNA -President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to inaugurate the Sunyani Airport on Wednesday for domestic flight operations to resume.

Currently, there is heavy Police and Military presence at the Airport, which was closed down in 2015 to pave way for rehabilitation and expansion works.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered the President is expected to touch grounds around 1000 hours to inaugurate the Airport, which would open the Bono Region and spur rapid socio-economic growth.

At the time of filing this report around 0922 hours on Wednesday government officials, including Ministers of state, Members of Parliament (MP), supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), traditional leaders and a section of the populace had arrived at the Airport.

In an interview with the GNA, Alhaji Abubakari Sadique, the Sunyani West Constituency Chairman of the NPP, expressed appreciation to the President for the expansion and rehabilitation works and expressed the hope that the second phase of the project would commence as scheduled.

He said the airport was dear to the people because it would not only open up the region but also attract investors and create jobs for the youth.

Alhaji Sadique appealed to the government to consider reshaping the deplorable road networks in the region and also develop some tourist attraction sites including the Nsoatre Ancient Shrine to boost eco-tourism.

He also cautioned estate developers and individuals to desist from encroaching on the airport lands and asked those who had already trespassed to relocate to pave the way for the construction of the second phase of the project.

The Sunyani Airport was originally constructed as an Airstrip and later upgraded into an airport in 1969 and it currently has a total runway length of about 1,520 metres.

In 2015, the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) shut down the airport as a precautionary measure to forestall any disaster.

But, the government awarded a contract for rehabilitation and expansion of the facility in 2019 to lift the airport to modern standard to make air travel in the region more attractive.
