Keep quiet and learn — John Kumah blasts Sam George on MoMo tax on offerings, tithes

Deputy Minister for Finance, Dr. John Kumah has taken a swipe at the Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam George for claiming that the E-levy will affect tithes, offerings and zakat.

Dr. Kumah asked the astute MP to keep quiet and learn.

Responding to the MPs tweet on May 2, Dr. Kumah reiterated that Sam George’s argument that the E-levy will affect offerings, tithe and zakat is falsehood.

He added that, most faith based organizations use merchant MoMo numbers which are exempted from the 1.5% E-levy tax.

He stressed that the online platform through which people send these monies is what is being taxed and not the money itself.

Hitting hard at Sam George, Dr. Kumah queried, “When telcos charge people for using their medium to pay for offering, why don’t you say their actions are also affecting tithe, such unpatriotic comments. If you drive to parliament and you buy fuel which is taxed does that mean we are taxing your work as a parliamentarian? Keep quiet and learn”

On May 2, Ningo Prampram lawmaker, Sam George, tweeted at Dr. John Kumah telling the latter to keep quiet when IT deployment is being talked about.

Sam George was reacting to a Joy News headline which read “E-levy will apply to your tithes-Telecomms Chamber CEO confirms.”

Meanwhile, on April 29, Dr. John Kumah, in an interview on Accra based Joy News emphasized that offerings, tithes and zakat would not be taxed however, the medium through which they are sent would be taxed.

He likened his assertion to driving to the bank to withdraw the money before sending the said cash to church; the use of fuel or cost of transportation according to him is just like the 1.5% tax.

Subsequently on May 1, the E-levy took effect with many Ghanaians confused as to how the tax affects transactions following the reported cases of wrong deductions.

Continue to support the less privileged after Ramadan-Muslims urged

Kasoa, May 3, GNA – Sheikh Misbahu Harun, the Community Imam of Kasoa, Odupongkpehe, has urged Muslims to sustain the philanthropic drive of providing for orphans, the aged and other vulnerable groups outside the Muslim month of Ramadan.

Such a charitable deed, he said, was a means of purifying one’s wealth and a key to addressing social and economic imbalances in communities.

He made the remarks in a sermon delivered during Eid prayers at the Odupongkpehe Park in the Central region.

“We are ordained to give out zakat after Ramadan as it is a way of cleansing minor sins and purifying our deeds,” he stated.

Sheikh Harun urged Muslims who could not fast the entire month to repay in subsequent months since fasting in the month of Ramadan was compulsory.

He also advised the youth against engaging in reckless riding of motorbikes and driving vehicles as part of the Eid celebration.

The Imam added that” we have deliberately invited the police and so if you carelessly cause an accident, we will deal with you.”

A member of the congregation, Mrs Halima Koulibaly, expressed gratitude to Allah for granting her long life and hopeful economic situations would improve in the coming year for Muslims to celebrate the festival with “better disposable income.”

Muslims around the globe mark Eid-ul-Fitr at the end of 29 or 30 days of fasting in the month of Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

Muslims during the period are encouraged to increase good deeds while refraining from prohibitive acts such as gambling, fornicating, liquor consumption, among others.

They are also required to abstain from eating, drinking and engaging in sexual activity during the day.
