Otto Addo can make history with Black Stars against Nigeria – Kwesi Nyantakyi

Former Ghana Football Association [GFA] capo, Kwesi Nyantakyi has backed newly appointed Black Stars interim boss, Otto Addo to make history with the team.

Addo, 43, takes up the mantle as the successor of Milovan Rajevac.

The Serbian trainer was dismissed after Black Stars poor performance at the just-ended 2021 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] in Cameroon.

He will be assisted by George Boateng and former Asante Kotoko coach, Didi Dramani.

The newly constituted technical team have been tasked to steer the Black Stars to book a place in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Despite the noise around the appointment of Addo, the former CAF 1st Vice President has called for support for the technical team adding that Otto Addo can make history with the team.

Speaking on GTV Sports Plus’ ‘Saving our Passion’ on Thursday, Mr Nyantakyi said, “This is a new technical team and I believe when we support them physically and spiritually, we can do it against Nigeria.

“Otto Addo is on the verge of qualifying the Black Stars for the World Cup but at this era, he must take decisions on his own.

“I strongly believe that we will make it to Qatar. We must rally behind this technical team and especially Otto Addo.

“The media must be positive in their reportage and if we support and rally behind Otto Addo, we will make it to the Mundial this time around in Qatar,” he added.

Ghana will host Nigeria on March 24 at the Cape Coast Stadium before travelling to Abuja for the return game on March 29.

Assemblyman appeals for renovation of Pampawie R.C Primary School

Pampawie (O/R), February 11, GNA-The Assemblyman for Pampawie Electoral Area, Mr Foster Abasah, has appealed to governmental and non-governmental organisations in the Kadjebi District to help renovate the Pampawie Roman Catholic (R.

C) Primary and Kindergarten School block.

He said the facelift would ensure decent and conducive teaching and learning environment for the 548 pupils from KG to Primary six.

The poor state of the school block was impacting negatively on the academic performance of the pupils of the school, Mr Abasah stated.

He made the disclosure to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview at Pampawie in the Oti Region.

The R.C Church established the school in 1935 after the Missionaries arrived in Pampawie in 1934 to provide quality education to the people of the area.

Unfortunately, the school had never seen any major renovation since, leading to its current deplorable state.

Mr Abasah said the government’s quest to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals Four would not succeed if the school’s infrastructure remained in such a state.

Mr John Kwakye, the Headteacher of the School, told the GNA that they were forced to combine two classes because of the lack of space to accommodate the pupils.

He said the situation had led to overcrowding in class, thus affecting effective teaching and learning.

Mr Kwakye described the situation as sorrowful, worrisome and unacceptable to have such a school in the 21st Century, where every child was supposed to access education without any hindrance.

He, therefore, reiterated the need for quick renovation work to save the situation.

Africa needs cultural institute to promote language studies-Linguistic Professor

Accra, Feb. 11, GNA- Professor Adams Bodomo, Department of African Studies, University of Vienna, Austria, has proposed the establishment of an African cultural institute run by the African Union to promote the study of African languages.

The Institute, to be named after Pan-African icons, would be mandated to teach African languages and cultures worldwide with curricula contents designed by a coordinating body in Africa.

Prof Bodomo made the suggestion in Accra at a lecture on the topic: “Linguistic Pan-Africanism as a Global Future,” organised by the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Pan-Africanism, he said, was a dominant ideological notion that people of African descent could only stand to gain a better future if the continent united and pooled resources together politically, economically and socially.

He explained that linguistic pan-Africanism encouraged the pooling together of Africa’s linguistic resources towards better and more efficient communication and cultural development on the continent.

Prof Bodomo said the establishment of a coordinating committee for creating standards for testing proficiency levels must be established, with funding from Africa and its diaspora.

“We must reverse the trend where foreign bodies from places like Europe and China, create institutions for teaching us their languages to a situation in which we require them to learn our languages in order to ply their trade in Africa,” he said.

He urged Ghanaians to be literate in their language of identity, and that every African child should be given the opportunity to learn to speak, read, and write in their mother tongue or any one of their languages of identity.

Prof Bodomo suggested that all diaspora Africans should be encouraged to learn to speak, read, and write Swahili and eventually Afirihili, as it had the greatest potential of becoming the most widespread pan-African language.

That, he said, would give an identity mark the African legacy, viewed as an object to interpret the nature around the continent for mutual benefits.

He urged the regional and continental level institutions and charity organizations to dedicate sections of their running costs to funding prizes and research grants for the promotion of African languages and literature.

Prof Bodomo said all foreign students, who came to study in Africa, seeking permanent residence permits in Africa, must be made to pass standardised tests in an African language.

He said the creation of a language policy must be nationalistic, stressing: “It is time to start seeing cross-regional language learning, where East Africans learn West African languages and vice versa and North Africans learn Southern African languages and vice versa.”
