2022 World Cup: Black Stars will make an impact in Qatar – Yaw Preko

Former Medeama SC head coach, Yaw Preko has tipped the Black Stars to make an impact at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The West African country having missed out on the last edition of the Mundial in Russia in 2018 has made a return to the global showpiece.

Ghana qualified at the expense of Nigeria over two-legged games in the World Cup playoffs last month.

The Black Stars have been paired with Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea in Group H.

With the Mundial scheduled to kick off in November, Preko, who is a former Ghana international is confident the Black Stars will make an impact.

“We chance to make an impact only if Otto Addo, or whoever becomes head coach, invites players who can do the job for him,” he told Graphic Sports.

Preko, who made 68 senior appearances for Ghana between 1992 and 2007 also maintained that going into such a tournament with a relatively inexperienced squad, it was important that Ghanaians’ expectations were managed in order to ease the pressure off the players as the underdog tag could work to Ghana’s advantage.

“They should not raise the expectation of the nation too high and put so much pressure on the young players,” he said.

“Let people know that this team is still new and young. We should let the players take it one match at a time then we see how it goes,” he added.

The Black Stars will open their 2022 World Cup campaign against Portugal before playing South Korea in their second group game.

Ghana will wrap up their group phase games against Uruguay.
