Nestlé to support transition to regenerative food system

Accra,- Nestlé, a global food and beverage firm, plans to support and accelerate the transition to a regenerative food system through conservation and rehabilitation approach.

This will help protect and restore the environment and improve farmers’ livelihoods and enhance the well-being of farming communities.

The strategy would involve working with its food system partners, including the company’s network of more than 500,000 farmers and 150,000 suppliers, to advance regenerative farming practices at the heart of the food system.

A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency said as part of that journey the company would initiate new programmes to help address the socio-economic challenges of the transition.

The announcement was made in the lead up to the UN Food Systems Summit in New York as Nestlé’s contribution to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

It also follows the recent report from the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that shows the climate crisis is intensifying.

Mr Paul Bulcke, the Chairman of Nestlé, was quoted as saying: “We know that regenerative agriculture plays a critical role in improving soil health, restoring water cycles and increasing biodiversity for the long term.”

“These outcomes form the foundation of sustainable food production and, crucially, also contribute to achieving our ambitious climate targets.”

Nestlé is a signatory of the UN Business Ambition for 1.5°C pledge and was one of the first companies to share its detailed, time-bound climate plan in December 2020. The company is taking measures to halve its emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050.

“With our long-standing partnerships with farming communities globally, we want to increase our support for farming practices that are good for the environment and good for people,” said Mark Schneider, Nestlé Chief Executive Officer.

“In the spirit of enabling a just transition it is vital that we support farmers around the world that take on the risks and costs associated with the move towards regenerative agriculture.”

The statement said the company was investing CHF1.2 billion over the next five years to spark regenerative agriculture across its supply chain, using three primary levers to help farmers adopt regenerative practices.

It noted that Nestle was applying state-of-the-art science and technology, providing technical assistance by leveraging its vast network of Research and Development experts and agronomists to develop innovations with lower environmental impact.

The company would offer investment support to farmers through co-investing, facilitating lending or helping them obtain loans for specific equipment.

Nestlé would offer premiums for many raw materials produced using regenerative agriculture practices and buy bigger quantities, the statement said.

Mr Charles Buabin, GTA Tema Regional Director, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Tema ahead of the global commemoration on September 27, that the day will be marked at the Shai Hills Resources Reserve on the theme: “Tourism for Inclusive Growth”.

The day is celebrated to herald the socio-economic, political, and cultural importance of the sector to national and international economies through Gross Domestic Product growth, jobs, and employment creation.

Mr Buabin said the tour, is expected to promote domestic tourism and make Ghana a preferred tourist destination not only in West Africa and Africa but globally.

He described the tour as a remarkable step towards the gradual recovery of the tourism sector.

According to him, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, in conjunction with the Ghana Tourism Authority, had planned a four-day activity to mark the Day and discuss the theme, “Tourism for Inclusive Growth” to convey tourism’s role in ensuring inclusive growth for communities and national development.

He noted that the 2021 World Tourism Organisation (WTO) Day Planning Committee had slated September 24 for holding the Public and Private Partnership (PPP) forum.

The forum is expected to bring together the public and private tourism sector stakeholders, relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), NGOs, and Development Partners, to interface and dialogue progress, achievements, and failures of the Tourism sector at Ho in Volta Region.

The official “International” World Tourism Day is held in a WTO-designated country with participation from the rest of the world; and this year’s Day will be held in Cote d’Ivoire to essentially highlight a participatory approach to creating and sharing tourism wealth for poverty reduction, decency in living standards, and livelihoods security.

Ghana Domain Name Registry gets governing board

Accra,– The Ghana Domain Name Registry Thursday had its first ever Governing Board with the task to build strong and affordable domain names for the country.

The Ghana Domain Name Registry (GDNR) was established under the Electronic Transactions Act of 2008 and mandated to, among other things, administer and manage the country’s domain (internet) name space, comply with international best practice in the administration of the “.gh domain name space license” and regulate the respective registries.

The nine-member Board is chaired by Dr Nana Yaa Tina Owusu-Prempeh, with members including Nana Kofi Asafu-Aidoo, the Executive Director of GDNR; Mr Andrew Ayitey Okoe Bulley, Minister’s nominee, and Dr Francis Boateng Agyenim, Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research.

The rest are ACP Vance Baba Gariba, representative of the Ministry of the Interior, Mr Lucas Yikimpa Chigabatia, rep of Public Universities, Professor Daniel Obeng-Ofori, rep of Private Universities, and Mr Isaac Teye Ayiku and Madam Estelle Akofio-Sowah, both reps of Industry Forum.

Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communication and Digitalisation, who swore in the Board members, said the appointment of a governing board for the Registry was a critical milestone in Ghana’s domain name history.

She said having a country-specific domain was not only a national pride but also a critical resource for both individuals and businesses in building customer confidence, trust and customer predictability.

The Minister said a country-specific domain would strongly and positively impact the development of internet in the country, adding that it would also enhance cybersecurity and make the ownership, usage and control of the country’s own data possible.

“It is, therefore, long overdue for individuals and corporate bodies in Ghana to use the .gh domain and reap the benefits associated with country specific domains, including enhanced visibility via the internet through the various search engines,” she said.

It became operational in 2017 but had been without a functioning governing board since then.

Mrs Owusu-Ekuful said the Registry was a crucial resource for the country because the transfer of individuals onto digital platforms formed part of the digital economy.

“I must emphasise that the work of the GDNR in handling .gh domain names is vital to Government’s digitalisation agenda since the local domain names form a core part of the local internet,” she said.

“This will allow individuals, government and commercial institutions to take full advantage of the numerous benefits the internet brings, accelerating the growth of the economy generally.”

The Minister, therefore, urged members of the Board to use their diverse backgrounds, skills and expertise to carefully navigate the re-delegation process to ensure its successful completion.

She tasked them to ensure the completion of the re-delegation process as well as strengthen the basic infrastructure of the Registry to ensure system resilience to fully carry out its mandate.

“This is of utmost importance, as stated earlier, because all other activities of the GDNR hinge on this,” she added.

Dr Tina Owusu-Prempeh, the Chairperson, welcomed the challenge and assured the Minister of members’ readiness to implement policies and programmes that would not only generate income but also build a strong domain name for the country.

The Minister also inaugurated the Board of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA).

The nine-member board, chaired by Mr Kwabena Addo Atuah, has Mr Richard Edmund Okyere-Fosu, Director-General, NITA; Mr Gerard Nana Kwakwa Osei-Tutu from National Security Council, and Mr Issah Yahaya, Expert in ICT issues, as members.

Others are Mrs Matilda Acheampong Wilson, Dr Albert Antwi-Boasiako and Madam Sheila Minkah-Premo, President’s nominees; Madam Ama Pomaa Boateng, the Ministry’s nominee, while Industry is yet to nominate a member.
