Chinese contractor drills longest railway tunnel in East Africa

NAIROBI- China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) has drilled the longest railway tunnel in East Africa, the company said Monday.

The tunnel is part of phase 2A of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) that runs from the Kenyan Capital city of Nairobi to Naivasha town.

An Aijun, general manager of SGR project head office at the CCCC, said that during the excavation, the project team overcame the challenges of water leaks, uneven pressure, shallow-depth excavation, surrounding rocks, structural fault-line, and oil pipeline protection.

“With a total length of 4.5 km, the Ngong tunnel is currently the longest tunnel in East Africa and the dominant work in SGR Phase 2A,” An said during celebrations to mark the breakthrough of the Ngong tunnel.

The Phase 2A which extends for about 120 km is set to be completed in 2019.

The 4.5 kilometreNgong tunnel has been designed as a single-track railway tunnel with a clearance height of nine meters and a width of seven meters.

CCCC engineers used the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) of drilling and blasting to build the tunnel and it is the first time that such a method has been used on such a large scale in Kenya.

The tunneling method is economical, efficient and has strong adaptability for different geological and groundwater conditions.

The method is preferred because it controls surface collapse effectively, and enhances the working environment during construction.

An said the construction team addressed the technical difficulty in designing and constructing in the Great Rift Valley to ensure a safe breakthrough of the tunnel and this means that the SGR Phase 2A has entered a new stage, laying a solid foundation for inauguration next year.

The general manager said that with quality as a foundation and safety as a lifeline, they shall maintain an all-round quality control system in the source, process, methodology and management, and enforce strict safety management at all procedures.

“We will continue to protect the environment, implement local contents, and participate in social welfare, bringing real benefits to the local communities,” he added.

“Together with all our Kenyan partners, and building on what has been achieved at the FOCAC (Forum on China-Africa Cooperation) Summit in Beijing, we shall construct a time-honored railway that will stand the test of time and operations, achieving greater success in a new era between our two nations,” he added.

According to Steve Zhao, the CCCC Kenya SGR Project Spokesperson, 146 refuge holes of different sizes have been built within the tunnel to allow maintenance workers to take cover as the train approaches.

“There is one large refuge hole set up every 150 meters in the tunnel, and one small refuge hole set up every 30 meters in the tunnel,” Zhao explained.

A 533-meter wide emergency rescue channel has also been built within the tunnel, to allow for vehicle access in case of emergencies.

“We have reserved space to install fans within the tunnel. Six jet fans can be installed to ensure air ventilation once the tunnel is operational,” added Zhao.

He revealed that about 600 workers and engineers worked tirelessly overcoming all odds for 24 months to accomplish the engineering marvel.

Michael Waweru, chairman of board at the Kenya Railways, said the SGR is one of the most important transformational projects for the railway and entire transport sector in the region.

“It is an ambitious undertaking by the government of Kenya envisioned to revolutionize the social economic development of the country,” Waweru said.

The chairman said it is expected that as a result of construction of the SGR line, it will lead to an upsurge in development in the towns along the corridor, ease transportation of their resources and foster sustainable development patterns.

Thousands rally in Cape Town against rising crime, high unemployment

CAPE TOWN- Thousands went to the streets here in the South African capital on Tuesday morning to voice their anger over rising crime and high unemployment.

Protests took place in several communities hit hard by crimes and unemployment.

The mass rally was largely peaceful, except at one location where protesters scuffled with police and prompted a police crackdown. Police officers fired teargas.

Witnesses said that rubber bullets were also used, causing injuries to several protesters. The city’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety JP Smith confirmed police use of teargas and rubber bullets at one location.

The city said the various gatherings in the city were illegal as organizers did not submit an application beforehand as required by the law.

The protests were organized by the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), which represents millions of workers and is also a coalition partner with the ruling African National Congress (ANC).

The planned “shutdown” of Cape Town by protesters had a limited impact and police had the whole situation under control, said Smith.

The city has deployed a large contingent of law enforcement officers to prevent the situation from running out of control, the city’s traffic service spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout said.

Unemployment hovers above the 27 percent mark in South Africa. The country is also among the countries with the highest murder rate in the world, with 57 murders reported every day, according to statistics released by Police Minister BhekiCele earlier this month.

Releasing his annual report on crime statistics in Parliament on Sept. 11, Cele said 20,336 people were murdered in South Africa in the period from April 1, 2017 to April 31, 2018, up 6.9 percent from the 19,016 murders for the previous period.

Among other crimes, robbery of cash-in-transit vans also saw a sharp increase in the period surveyed, up by 86 counts, from 152 to 238, with most robberies happening on the roads and in business areas, and 40 in shops and malls.

In most instances, security guards’ weapons were taken from them. Rape has increased by 0.5 percent, or by seven more people per day, meaning that 109 people are raped every day in South Africa.

Residential burglaries have decreased by 7.5 percent, with some 625 homes burgled every day in South Africa, the minister said.

‘Vote for Bagbin in presidential primaries for victory in 2020’

Winneba (C/R)-Mr Charles K. Fosu, the Public Relations Officer for Friends of Alban SumaniBagbin, a presidential aspirant in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries, has appealed to delegates of the Central Region to vote massively for MrBagbin.

He said MrBagbin, who is also the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, is the only aspirant who could lead the NDC to win power in the 2020 Election.

MrFosu made the appeal after MrBagbin had interacted with members of group from the Central Region.

He said they had realised that the aspirant was the only presidential candidate in the NDC primaries who could unite and rebrand the Party for victory in 2020.

He said the NDC, at the moment, needed someone who could make it stronger and more business-like at the grassroots, to make the Party attractive to Ghanaians.

MrFosu, who is also the third Deputy Youth Organiser of the Gomoa Central branch of the NDC, hinted that MrBagbin was ever ready to assist cadres of the Party who had been relegated.

MrBagbin is a person with unblemished records in his political career, and if given the nod as the presidential candidate for the Party, no one could level corrupt or any malfeasance against him as far as public office position is concerned, he said.

The aspirant with his political experience could assist the Party to recapture many of the parliamentary seats that were lost to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2016 election, he said.

MrBagbin has been tried, tested and proven with an enviable record who can lead the NDC to win convincingly in the 2020 Elections, the Deputy Youth Organiser said.

He said being the Second Deputy Speaker, MrBagbin had been consistently elected into Parliament by the people of NadowliKaleo Constituency since 1992 till date, which showed that the aspirant was credible.

MrBagbin is set to bring all sympathisers of the NDC together to work as a team to enable the Party to win the 2020 Elections to relieve Ghanaians of the hardship they are going through under the NPP Administration.
