Aboadze (W/R),- The Volta River Authority (VRA) has cut sod for repair works to begin on the damaged portion of the road stretching from Inchaban to Aboadze-Abuesi.
The scope of the work includes; the construction of 400mm huge drainage system, dredging of existing wind storm earth channel water, restoration of asphaltic pavement and repairing of the sinkholes to prevent any unwanted future problems.
Speaking in an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the sod cutting, the Director of Thermal Generation, Mr Edward E. Obeng-Kenzo said the damageed portion of the road was dangerous to the drivers and commuters.
He explained that the decision to repair the road was after appeals from the leadership of the communities to fix the road to avert any disaster.
“As the bad condition of the road continues to pose danger to drivers and commuters, VRA took up the cost of repairing the sinkhole as part of its corporate social programme to the communities”.
He encouraged the Shama District Assembly to bring on-board all stakeholders for effective cooperation and synergy of efforts to maintain the road due to its significance to the people.
He advised users to cooperate with the contractor to help construct durable road and complete it within the stipulated period of six months.
Mr Jacob B. Yawson, the Plant Manager of VRA said the road promoted economic activities in the two fishing communities and required attention, which the VRA was committed to collaborating with various stakeholders in the power enclave to achieve for the Shama District, especially Aboadze-Abuesi where the company operated.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Shama District Assembly, Mr Joseph Amoah explained that the people from the communities through their leadership and drivers’ union petitioned his outfit about the state of that portion of the road, which the Assembly discussed with the management of VRA to consider repairing for the benefit of the people.
Mr Amoah expressed gratitude to the management of VRA and assured that the Works Department of the Assembly would monitor and supervise the project to ensure that quality was not compromised.
The representatives of the Chiefs of Aboadze and Abuesi, Nana Kow Miano and Nana Boffo Mensah lamented the condition of the road and commended VRA for the intervention.
The Ghana Road and Private Transport Union (GPRTU) Chairman of Inchaban, Mr Aikins applauded VRA and the District Assembly for appreciating the need to repair the road which he said would help save their vehicles from damaging and prevent accidents.
