Suspect in Kashoggi murder arrested in Paris

Paris,Dec 7,(dpa/GNA) – Some three years after the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, one of the suspects has been arrested at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport, according to French media reports.

The 33-year-old is one of 20 suspects wanted internationally in the case, broadcaster RTL reported on Tuesday, citing police.

The former member of the royal guard had wanted to check in for a flight to Riyadh in the morning using his real name and identity card. The international police agency Interpol had issued a warrant for his arrest for murder.

Khashoggi was killed on October 2, 2018, in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul by a special commando from Riyadh.

The leadership of the conservative Islamic kingdom was subjected to sharp criticism afterwards. The government in Riyadh only admitted to the murder after international pressure.

According to a US intelligence report published at the end of February 2021, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had authorized the operation to capture or kill Khashoggi. Saudi Arabia rejected this as false.

A trial of 26 defendants in the case has been under way in Istanbul for well over a year.

The main defendants are a former close adviser to the crown prince and the country’s former deputy intelligence chief. They are accused of inciting other defendants to murder under torture.

All the defendants are Saudi citizens. The court is hearing the case in their absence.
