Keta (VR), – Mr Raymond Siameh-Carr, Principal Field Officer (PFO) with the Keta Municipal office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has asked pupils of Dzelukope E.
P. Basic School to balance their rights with responsibilities.
He said rights and responsibilities which could best be said to be two sides of the same coin must go hand in hand if people had intentions to protect and defend Ghana’s Constitution for the good of all.
Mr Siameh-Carr who said this during an interaction with the pupils as part of this year’s celebration of the Citizenship Week in the Keta Municipality noted that just as in a give-and-take fashion, a citizen insisting on his/her right to life must do well to safeguard the life of another.
“The respect for human rights and freedoms as a Ghanaian citizen is very vital. So, as pupils, we should respect the rights of our colleagues. As citizens, we always demand for our rights, neglecting our responsibility.
According to Article 41 of the constitution ‘the enjoyment of rights and freedoms is inseparable from the performance of duties and obligations.’ Simply, you demand for your rights, you have a duty to protect others’ rights.”
The PFO urged the young ones to imbibe the core values of the Constitution including equality of opportunity, freedom, justice, probity and accountability, respect for rule of law, unity and stability and respect for human rights and freedoms.
In line with the Citizenship Week, one of the flagship programmes the NCCE instituted in 2012 to serve as a platform to actively engage young citizens to inculcate in them the spirit of oneness, Ghanaian values and patriotism, Mr Siameh-Carr charged the pupils to serve as agents everywhere for a united Ghana.
“This year’s theme, ‘We Are One, Ghana First’ was chosen to strengthen peace and unity among Ghanaians after coming out of the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections and so let’s ensure that we put our personal interest aside and unite in order to build a better Ghana.”
Mr. William Dumeda, Head teacher of the school commended the NCCE for the visit which engaged the pupils on their civic rights and responsibilities and underscored the need for such visits to be made frequent to help groom young citizens into responsible and patriotic adults in future.
Similar engagements were held at Vui AME-Zion, OLA Convert, Anlo-Afiadenyigba E.P, Keta E.P, Keta R.C, Xorvi M.A. Basic, Havedzi AME- Zion, Kedzi AME-Zion, Vodza M.A. Basic, Tsiame R.C and Tengekope M.A. Basic Schools among others in the Keta Municipality.
