Revert management of Awlime water supply to GWC— DCE urges Kpedze youth

Mr Ernest Apau, District Chief Executive of Ho West, has appealed to the community of Kpedze to revert to the Ghana Water Company, management of the Awlime water supply system to ensure a stable supply.

The facility, constructed by some German entities in the 1960s, and which was under the control of the State water company, was taken over by youth of the community some 15 years ago.

The DCE, who was addressing a homecoming durbar at Kpedze, organized by the Kpedze Youth Development Association, said the take over had affected the quality of water supply, as the community on its own was unable to properly maintain and improve water treatment and distribution.

He said the water company could best ensure that the facility remained of use to all, and assured that the Kpedze Water Expansion project was ongoing to address challenges with accessing potable water in more communities.

A visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to the storage facility found out that there was no filtration component of the distribution system.

The GNA was told it could not be replaced years after it malfunctioned, and had to be taken off.

The homecoming durbar the theme, “Restoring Unity in Kpedze for Sustainable Development, the Role of the Youth.”

The DCE praised the community for promoting peace and unity, and said a harmonious community would help achieve developmental aspirations.

Mr George Ofori, Chairman of the development association, said the community had lost the “enviable unity” it possessed, which had affected the spirit of communism and livelihoods.

He added that chieftaincy disputes had affected the relationship between traditional leaders and the youth, and appealed to the youth guard against entities that fostered hatred and local separation.

“This is a clarion call and plead to all the youth of Kpedze to be courageous and patriotic to their motherland to effectively play their role as the driving force in building Kpedze together.

“We the youth must be fully engaged with determination, professionalism, and with a high sense of sacrifice in restoring unity in Kpedze,” the Chairman said, adding that, challenges including water and health delivery could be addressed through unity.
