Accra,- One robber has been shot dead by the police and three others: Richard Nkrumah, alias Paa Yaw, Alex Appiah, alias Ameley, and Emmanuel, alias Awoloh, arrested by the Ashanti Regional Police Command at Oseikrom, on Thursday.
A statement signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kwesi Ofori, Director-General, Public Affairs, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said a Police Patrol Team responded to a distress call at about 0730 hours that a gang of robbers had attacked some miners near Oseikrom.
It said while the Police were approaching, the gang opened fire on them.
The statement said the Police also returned fire leading to the death of one, while the rest fled the scene.
It said at about noon the same day, two persons, Richard Nkrumah, alias Paa Yaw, and Alex Appiah, alias Ameley, who were part of the robbery gang, were arrested through an intelligence-led operation.
The statement said the two suspects led the Police to the crime scene where a Pump-action gun loaded with five live cartridges was retrieved.
It said during interrogation, the suspects mentioned one Emmanuel, alias Awoloh, a driver of the miners, as the mastermind of the robbery operation.
The statement said strenuous intelligence and operational efforts later led to the successful arrest of suspect Emmanuel.
It said the three suspects were now in custody assisting investigations.
The statement said the body of the deceased had been deposited at the Obuasi Government Hospital Morgue awaiting identification and autopsy.
It commended the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Afful Boakye Yiadom, and his team, especially the officers and men of the Obuasi Divisional Command, for a successful operation.
The statement assured the public of the Police’s resolve to weed out armed gangs in the communities to ensure socio-economic activities were carried out in a peaceful and safe environment.
