Meet Ernest Mawuli, the Overall Best Graduating Student for 2021 | UPSA

But for the benevolence of his pastor and other philanthropists, Ernest Mawuli who graduated as the overall best undergraduate student at the 13th Congregation of UPSA, says his dream of getting a university education would have hit the rocks.

Ernest graduated with First Class Honours in Bachelor of Science (Accounting) and emerged the best graduating student in his department as well as the topmost student in the Faculty of Accounting & Finance with a FCGPA of 3.87.

He says he is humbled by his achievements and particularly overjoyed for not disappointing those who believed in his dreams and invested in him.

Ernest, the only child of his parents, lost his father almost around the same time he was preparing for his WASSCE.

He says his late dad meant everything to him and his unexpected demise did not only affect his psychological and emotional wellbeing but also his education.

After struggling through senior high school with the kind assistance of a scholarship from Plan International Ghana, Ernest said his ambition of furthering his education at the tertiary level appeared bleak due to financial constraints.

“I didn’t have anyone to support me financially even though I had applied for admission at UPSA through the generosity of a well-wisher,” Ernest recounted.

To exacerbate his fears, he says his WASSCE result was withheld by the West African Examination Council, threatening to dash his hopes of higher education.

“But by the grace of God I eventually made it to UPSA after WAEC released my result,” he said.

The shy-looking young man who aspires to be a Finance accountant and a tax consultant explained that his decision to enrol in UPSA was influenced by the University’s unique approach to academic excellence and cutting-edge professional development.

“It was a tough decision for me to make, looking at my circumstance at the time. But the truth is I have always wanted to read accounting at the tertiary level even while in SHS, so settling on UPSA which is a centre of academic excellence in Ghana was a bold decision I took despite the fact I did not know how I was going to pay for my fees.”

Halfway through his studies at UPSA, Ernest’s dazzling academic performance attracted the corporate sponsorship of Shoprite Ghana which offered him a full scholarship in his third year.

After picking up three student prizes at graduation 2021, the assiduous young professional says he is turning his attention to the ACCA professional accountancy programme where he is hoping to qualify as a Chartered Accountant.

Ernest is a product of the Mawuli Senior High School in Ho, Volta Region, where he studied business and completed in 2017.

He said he is extremely grateful to his pastor, Rev Kofi Vovonyo Akwetey of the Crossover Evangelistic Ministry, Shoprite Ghana and other benevolent individuals through whose kindness he has gotten this far.
