Kufuor Does Not Decide Who Wins NPP Presidential Nomination

Whoever Andrew Appiah-Danquah may be, he is definitely too ethnocentrically untutored to be capable of making the right judgmental call vis-à-vis who gets to succeed a lame-duck President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo (See “It’s Not Automatic for Vice Presidents to Succeed President[s] After His Tenure, This’s Alan’s Time – Lawyer Appiah Danquah” Modernghana.com 5/30/21). Maybe somebody far more in tune and in touch with the history and the pulse of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) needs to inform and enlighten Mr. Appiah-Danquah about the fact that among the things that they don’t teach students in law school is how to accurately gauge the leadership GPS or Roadmap of any significant flagship political party or establishment like the New Patriotic Party.

And, by the way, for his edification or instructive enlightenment, Mr. John Agyekum-Kufuor had little to absolutely no impact on the decision by party delegates to thrice select the son of the legendary Chief Justice Edward Akufo-Addo as the Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party in 2008, 2012 and 2016. Indeed, if the self-styled political forecaster had been paying studious attention to the public pronouncements of the then lame-duck President Agyekum-Kufuor and long after the official retirement from active politics of the latter, he would not be making such a congenital buffoon of himself. He would have remembered, for example, that shortly after the Ridge residence of the recently deceased former President Jerry John Rawlings was heavily damaged by a massive fire outbreak, among the first innuendo-fraught public statements that Mr. Kufuor made was to vividly and unmistakably suggest that a recently defeated Candidate Akufo-Addo may very likely have been behind this fire outbreak, which Mr. Kufuor, who had at the time and presently has absolutely no expert knowledge or professional training in fire outbreaks, readily classified and characterized as arson.

It was the most inadvisable remark to have been made since Independence by any former Ghanaian Head-of-State. At any rate, the reason that an Akufo-Addo-taunting Mr. Agyekum-Kufuor obliquely gave for luridly and hatefully fingering Nana Akufo-Addo as the prime suspect in the early morning conflagration of the privately owned, actually officially and thievishly cannibalized, Ridge residence of the Rawlingses was that not just about every Tom, Dick or Harry could accede to or be democratically elected to the Presidency; and that it was very likely that the evil or satanic mastermind behind the conflagration of the Ridge residence of the Rawlingses was one who was clearly desperate to be elected President of the Sovereign Democratic Republic of Ghana but had been condignly or deservedly denied the same by the good people of our Republic.

You see, there is also a conveniently ignored funny side to Mr. Appiah-Danquah’s argument vis-à-vis whose turn it is presently to succeed to the Presidential Nomination of the New Patriotic Party. And it is the fact that Mr. Appiah-Danquah’s choice of a presidential racehorse, namely, Mr. Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, has been imperiously claiming that it was his turn to be nominated Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party since 1996, when a certain-to-lose Candidate Agyekum-Kufuor was so nominated. You see, Dear Reader, what is at issue here is not who personally thinks and feels that it is their turn to be nominated the 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party, but really who the voters, formerly party delegates, are convinced would be poised to bring home the proverbial bacon.

Presently, whether self-important critics like Monsieur Appiah-Danquah like it or not, absolutely none of the obvious pretenders to the presidential nomination of the New Patriotic Party, going into the 2024 Presidential Election, comes even within 100 miles of closing in on the man and candidate to beat, namely, Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia. His unquestionable loyalty to the party brooks absolutely no contest or rivalry from Mr. Kyerematen, who has an unenviable record of having resigned from the New Patriotic Party in 2008, with just four months to that year’s December Presidential Election. You see, self-infatuated megalomaniacal quitters never made good leaders, let alone fetching presidential candidates, in our particular instance.

But, perhaps, the most significant question to ask here is the following: Why would a Candidate Kyerematen expect, hypothetically speaking, a losing Candidate Mahamudu Bawumia to back him up in the runup to the 2024 Presidential Election, knowing fully well that in 2008, a primary-defeated Candidate Alan Kyerematen chose to take a hike, that is, the self-interested and primrose path of resignation from the New Patriotic Party, rather than back the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia presidential ticket? You see, Dear Reader, Mr. Appiah-Danquah clearly does not seem to remarkably appreciate the fact that Kyebi, Akropong, Aburi and Abomosu are much closer on the road to Accra than Atwima-Nwabiagya, Bompata, Juaso, Ejisu (Edweso), Patasi and even Oguaa (Cape Coast).
