Trier, Dec 7, Germany (dpa/GNA) – Luxembourg’s Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, has strongly condemned Saturday’s escalated rally against coronavirus measures that was held in Luxembourg city.
“Intolerance, hatred and violence have no place in Luxembourg,” he said in a government statement in parliament on Tuesday, stressing that Saturday’s incidents must not be repeated.
He said it was not acceptable that people marched through the city unannounced, for the most part ignoring the anti-coronavirus measures, and that a group then rioted and stormed the Christmas market. “We will not be intimidated.”
Last Saturday, according to police, around 2,000 demonstrators had gathered in the city to voice their displeasure at the announced new anti-coronavirus measures.
Some people knocked over barriers or climbed over them to enter the market.
Some of the demonstrators also went to the Chamber of Deputies, others to the prime minister’s residence.
