Accra,- Professor Nicolas Nsowah-Nuamah, the President of Dominion University College, has pledged commitment to collaborate effectively with the University of Kigali in Rwanda to build better Africa universities innovation ecosystems on the continent.
Prof Nsowah-Nuamah said Universities played an important role in innovation ecosystems, stressing that effective collaboration with the University was key to improving the higher education system on the African continent.
Prof Nsowah-Nuamah gave the assurance during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Kigali in Rwanda in Accra.
He stated that Dominion University decided to partner with the University of Kigali after they had carefully read about them and realised that the University of Kigali was a credible institution, considering that Rwanda was now a centre of excellence of higher education.
“Every University in Africa has its challenges because they have few members and that if you want to sit in your campus and think of developing, it is not going to help.
“We need to collaborate with either the private or public universities to determine the strength of each other for mutual benefits,” he stated.
He was hopeful that the partnership would enrich the personal curriculum vitae of faculty members since a number of the lecturers would be assigned to go and teach at the University of Kigali in Rwanda.
He said the College was producing students that were relevant to the emerging markets by equipping them with the right skills and attitude for national development.
“The College has revamped the Centre for skills development, which has prepared students with employable skills through zero-credit courses delivered by industry and practising professionals,” he said.
The Professor stated that the College had worked assiduously to improve institutional governance, strengthen the academic quality assurance unit to promote efficient staff self-assessment and regular students’ assessment of lecturers and effective peer review.
He pledged to review and diversify the College’s existing programmes to meet modern trends and increase school enrolment.
“Aside from signing this MoU with this credible University, we shall continue to develop strong partnerships with local industry to ensure demand-driven programmes that are relevant and address the needs of industry and society,” he assured.
Prof Robert E. Hinson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University of Kigali, said both Universities were desirous of establishing certain cooperative programmes, including the promotion and development of joint studies, research and training programmes as well as other educational programmes of mutual interest.
“Generally, we are trying to build a better African university eco-system in empowering the continent’s educational growth”.
