Consider PWDs in MMDCE appointments — GSPD

Tema,– The Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD) has appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to consider Persons With disabilities (PWDs) in the appointment of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

The GSPD in a statement to the Ghana News Agency on Frida and signed by the Reverend John Mefful, President of the society, and Mr Clifford Owusu Ansah, Secretary respectively.

The statement said, “We wish to express our profound gratitude to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over the appointment of Dr Joshua Makubu, a physically challenged individual, as the Oti Regional Minister.

“This goes to demonstrate the readiness of the President to form an all-inclusive government, a development we appreciate and applaud”.

But the GSPD had learnt with worry that out of over the 1,300 applicants for the 216 MMDCE vacancies, only four were persons living with disabilities.

According to the statement, the society wished more PWDs had applied, however, those who did had the track record of competence and exceptional leadership qualities.

“We strongly believe that, when given the opportunity to serve, these individuals would perform satisfactorily to the admiration of Ghanaians and the credit of the President,” the statement said.

The GSPD, therefore, appeal to the President to nominated all the four physically challenged individuals to serve in the respective MMDCEs vacancies they had applied for.

“This, we believe would not be too much to desire, particularly at this point in our national life when conscious efforts are being made to encourage and create an enabling environment for persons living with disabilities to bring their expertise to bear in building this nation,” the statement stated.
