Caretaker Gender Minister admonishes Board to help end Domestic violence

Accra, Nov. 5, GNA – The Caretaker Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection has urged the newly inaugurated 15-member Domestic Violence Board of the Ministry to be committed to the task to enable Ghana effectively deal with domestic violence.

Mrs Cecilia Abena Dapaah said, “I believe you are the right people to serve on this Board hence your appointment by the President, and so I encourage you to show dedication and commitment in the task ahead of you to enable Ghana effectively and holistically deal with domestic violence in our society.”

In remarks before the inauguration, she said domestic violence was abuse by one person against another in an intimate relationship in a domestic setting which may include marriage, dating, cohabitation among others.

She said domestic violence was one of the most common forms of gender-based violence in the world, which constitutes a human rights violation.

The Minister said while anybody could be affected, studies showed that women and girls suffered the most.

The Caretaker Minister said the government’s response to addressing the issue was encouraging.

Government, through the then Ministry, passed the Domestic Violence Bill into Law in 2007, which called for the establishment of the Domestic Violence Secretariat and the Victims of Domestic Violence Fund in 2008 and the National Domestic Violence Policy and Plan of Action in 2009 to respond to all issues of domestic violence in the country.

The Law also called for the setting up of a Management Board to work with the secretariat in executing its functions.

Mrs Dapaah said the functions of the Board as stipulated by the Domestic Violence Law include, making recommendations for a National Plan of Action against Domestic Violence, monitoring and reporting its progress, advising the Minister on policy matters under the Domestic Violence Act and preparing and promoting strategies to prevent and combat domestic violence.

The Board is also expected to link government agencies and organizations to promote the rehabilitation and reintegration of victims of domestic violence, prepare guidelines for disbursement and management of the Fund and conduct research.

Mrs Lariba Zuweira Abudu, Deputy Gender Minister and Board Chairperson expressed appreciation to the President for the appointment to serve the country in their various capacities.

She expressed optimism that the Board would be able to deliver on their mandate, considering the calibre of members.

“We will bring out good policies with the help of the secretariat, and ensure to tackle domestic violence cases heads on.”

The members of the committee include Mrs Patience Adomuah-Lartey, Mr Ebenezer Ashong Charway, Mad Rahilu Haruna, Madam Christiana Akrong, Chief Superintendent Owusuaa Kyeremeh, Dr Comfort Asare, and Madam Afua Brown-Eyison.

The rest are Madam Adwoa Adu-Sarkodie, Mama Bleameli Afeanyetornye III, Dr Ama Kyerewaa Edwin, Dr James Dankyi Clayman, Madam Esther Darko-Mensah, Madam Faustina Acheampong and Madam Malonin Asibi.
